I am going to be a high school Junior (c/o 2012) and I would really love to run in the college level. I am located in Pompano Beach, Fl and I want to go to UF for academics and also to run track/xc. I am going to run XC for my first time so will UF take fairly new runners who are willing to work hard? I never played any sports my whole life until I got into running and I love it. I've only ran track and i've been studying training methods and I will also train year-round to reach my goals.
How can I increase my chances of running in college. I know that UF is a D1 school so is it impossible for me to be able to run for them? I go to one of the best high schools in Florida (academic) I also take AP classes and do many extracurriculars in addition to track and will be running XC for my first time. (I am in JROTC and will be joining NHS.)
Can it be possible to run for UF or am I too of a beginner? What are some things I can do? Should I send them a questionnaire when I get good PRs? How can I get a scholarship to run for UF? Im also not rich so I wouldn't have a lot of money to gain entrance.
I am also short on time. I'll see how much I can improve with 2 years of training. I just have 2 track seasons and 2 XC seasons to show my performance. I will train year-round and see if I can improve to the 16 range for the 5k.
I only ran a 6:06 mile for track because I burned out in the intervals. I didn't know how fast to run them and I was running the 400s and 800s the fastest I could. I've only been running for a year. I also plan on breaking the school records for the 800,1600,3200, and 5000 so maybe UF would also consider that?
I now know how to train properly so i'll see how much improvement I can make. The best XC times in my county is mid 16's so I would have to be at their level. For the 2-mile I hope to run Sub 10. Wouldn't UF consider that I started running in my late sophomore year? I hear that coaches look for potential athletes that can benefit their running program.
