"The Soviet women swept the medals in the [Olympic pentathlon in 1980], with all three athletes bettering the previous world record. Actually, all three set world records, with bronze medalist Olga Kuragina crossing the line in the 800 first with 2:03.6, followed by silver medalist Olga Rukavishnikova in 2:04.8, and [Nadezhda] Tkachenko coming in 4/10ths of a second later for the gold medal. Tkachenko’s world record of 5,083 was the first mark ever over 5,000 points."
i remember reading about this in SI (when they cared about T&F). It posed an interesting question for IAAF - should Kuragina and Rukavishnikova be given a WR certs?
I cannot remember how it ended.
And I can't either, but I'd bet they gave certificates to all three. Reminds me, sort of, of the triple jump in Mexico City--five world records by three guys. Damn, can you imagine breaking the WR *twice* in an event, and ending up with a bronze medal?
On further investigation, I see that the IAAF officially ratified all five WRs in the triple (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triple_jump_world_record_progression), so maybe they did the same in that 1980 pent--I can't find a similar record progression for the event, however.
