SOLINSKY'S muscles vs WEBB'S muscles

Of course, one might point out that like Solinsky Webb set the AR while bulked up, and that "continually regressed" is utterly false to the phenomena, but I'll let you live in your dream-world.

He obviously put on muscle (and weight) and his times regressed.

My question remains, how does Solinsky "get away" with it?

Or maybe I have a similar build as Solinsky and Webb and am wondering what Solinsky did that makes his outcome different?

I don't know that he looks all that bigger. Obviously 8 lbs that he lost is significant, but as to your question Solinsky consistently runs 100 miles or more during larger volume with a large quantity done at MP or faster. So his aerobic development is loads greater than Alan. I would suspect that this is the main difference..plus I think Schumacher is much better at peaking his athletes without overworking them. It sounded as if Webb was constantly overtraining.

I agree he doesn't look bigger but camera angles and the like matter. Unless your Webb and you know how your weight and body fat% have changed over the years we are pretty much guessing. And sure AlSal said he lost 8lbs. But is that from 10lb heavier Webb (no running after surgery) or the 2009 version?

It looks to me like he put on more fat, his arms and stuff look bigger but thats because he has a layer of fat over them.

Hes definitely not nearly as lean in 09 as 07 but hes looking better now.

Not all muscles are created equal. Solinsky has mass in his legs. Webb has relatively useless mass in his arms.

Go into a concentration camp, lose 10lbs of muscle, tell me how well you run?

Solinsky has to be 5'11 at the very least while Webb I think is more like 5'9. Solinsky has always been bigger, even in high school. In Flotrack's post race interview with Solinsky he states that he has indeed lost some weight recently. Hopefully he stays healthy.

I think Solinksy might in fact be part samsquanch. Bugger is huge.

I don't think it's a matter of fat or skinny, it doesn't come down to pounds.

I see it as muscle tone. When either of them are ripped and toned, watch out. If they're flabby fabby, they'll lose (solinski to teg, webb to the field).

IMO, Webb> Solinski. Maybe not this second. But overall, in terms of talent, records, runs against great competition,, I think webb is the fuggin bombbbb. Solinski probably wouldn't have had the balls to step up to el gourrouj and lagat, while in high school. Webb wouldn't have minded scalping them. Solinski would not even be in the same race as top competition in his event. Webb freakin' led the world coming into world championships, along with his record. He has been the top dog, solinski can't make the claim to be top training partner.

You guys can have your noob running a noob event against no competition (by no competion, I mean 27 minute runners are not competition for worldly competitive 10k runners... see your prissy boys rupp and ritz at last olympics).

I'll keep my bald muscle-bulging freak who likes to gap world competion by 200 meters in a 1500 in a world championship heat in front of an audience of millions. I don't care if he won't on last olympicsis team. Cause I know when he is on, there's no one he won't put a gap on. No one he can't beat.

When rupp ritz and solinski are on, solinski loses to his training partner and a college aged kid (jager), rupp gets 10th place in the world and isn't in the same race, and ritz gets 9th in the world without the winners knowing how to spell his name, maybe even pronounce it.

Webb and scared of no kiprop. Sooner or later, he's gonna be back in front of the world, not chilling. He'll be gapping them.

See how Webb ignores the pretty girl (3:36-3:55 of clip) trying to give him the flowers? Sideways, forwards, and backwards, trying to get away from her and keep from doing what any decent human being would do? It is only after the man comes up from behind him (3:55), and has all but cornered him in a bear hug with an American flag, that Webb appears to ready to do the right and take the flowers!

And then there is the race itself. Notice the cowardly use of sit and kick tactics, waiting until the very homestretch to steal the victory. Whereas a real man, like Sam Chelanga, 25 year old Junior, awed the world by running away from teenage Chris Derrick from the very start of the 2009 NCAA XC championship. The contrast is stark.

I think the key statement in this thread needs to be slightly revised...

webb gains dead-weight and runs slower - webb was pretty jacked when he had a career year in '07, but in '08 and '09 he looked like a tub of lard with no muscle definition or anything. does anyone have weight stats from these years? i would not be surprised if there were no major differences. also, before we harp on webb for "too much arm muscle" lets remember what he looked like when he ran 3:30 and 3:46.

solinsky loses weight and runs a faster 10k - it'll be interesting to see how much strength he sacrificed to loose that weight. his speed probably suffered substantially. look for him to be further back from teg and jager in the 5k.

Webb just looked soft in '08 and '09. Not fat, just a little soft. That is not a good look for a runner. Either be rail thin or have a decent amount of muscle, but fat spells disaster for any potential great runner.

As for Solinsky, I wouldn't worry about him lacking strength. He is probably still the strongest American distance runner out there, and in an MMA tournament he would definitely win given his wrestling base.

This 26:59 is nothing but good for his potential at the shorter distances. Solinsky is still a beast, just a somewhat leaner beast.

1. 3:55 indoor mile this year, 1:56 800m to close last weekend.

2. Jager's PR: 13:22, Solinsky's second 5k last weekend: ~13:24.

judging from the pics, is Webb wearing a wig????
