It could be the time, the person who did it, or a combo of both.

Solinsky's run, because it's something that has to date been the domain of East Africans only. Sub 13 has already been done, albeit by very few 'white guys.'
It's awesome that in the last year we've had 2 quite shocking ARs.
Both were quite unlike Webb's mile record that was obviously hyped and very expected given his previous performances.
Tough one. Ritz's 12:56 was shocking because I don't think anyone was expecting it at all. Last night's race, was a shocker, but pre-race there was a lot of talk of breaking the AR and possibly going sub-27. Of course, the fact that Solinsky did it is probably more shocking than Ritz breaking 13. Especially in his 10000 debut. Slight edge to Solinsky.
If someone told me Ritz would, at some point in his career, run a 12:56, I would seriously consider it as a possibility. If someone would have told me Solinsky would run a sub-27 at any point in his career I'd have laughed in their face. Amazing run.
A few American need to run sub 12:45 and 26:30 before they can be considered on a par with the rest of world. It doesn't matter whether they are "classified" as White, Black, Asian, Hispanic or as an Immigrant. There's a long way to go.

You reliaze there probably are not more than 3 guy running those events who could run those times right now. Sub 27 is great for Africans too, same with sub 13. America is getting closer and closer to them.
I expected Ritz to break 27:00 before he broke 13:00. And I expected Solinsky to break 13:00 before he broke 27:00.

This. I was excited to see Chris in the 10k, and though I didn't know what to expect, I didn't think anything faster than 27:30 would happen. People were going nuts when Webb ran 27:34 there a few years ago. 12:56 is awesome, but 26:59, especially by a guy in his debut, is just freakin ridiculous. Plus, Chris seems like a cool guy who has always been there putting in the work but has played second fiddle to Teg in recent years. The guy deserved a big race, and he got it. Plus he beat Rupp, which makes almost everyone happy.
I think this may be the most exciting moment on letsrun so far.

Time meaning performance versus performer
I would put it with Hall running sub-60 by himself first time out.
Hall, Ritz and Solinsky now each have their "definitive" race... Webb, Teg and Rupp are more incremental in their careers, for better or for worse.
Both equally for different reasons. Ritz started off in the back and looked like he was struggling the entire way, Suddenly he was in 2nd place and bearing down on Bekele!
Solinsky looked the class of the field the entire way, clipping on everyone heels he was so full of run. Finally with 900m to go, he must have realized that they were shot and he had business to take care of. Those last two laps were a thing of beauty.
I think Solinsky just decide to go for it. He seemed to not care whether he would blow up or not. That's why he ran so great in the last two laps. He not only realized he was having a great race, he was willing to simply floor it --run as hard as he could-- and not worry about any negative consequences. He truly amazed himself, and the confidence boost be got is worth more than anything.

Webb's high school mile record isn't what you would have called "definitive"?
Ignorant statment because:
1) 3 guys EVER have run under 12:46 - Bekele, Geb, and Komon.
and
2) 3 guys EVER have run under 26:30 - Bekele, Geb, and Tergat.
Solinsky is the white-boy/first non-african descent to go sub 27.
Solinsky's 26:59 was most shocking for sure. I wouldn't have picked him to do that in a million years.
Solinsky, without a doubt. I think that the quality of the two performances were pretty nearly equal. But Solinsky's run just came out of nowhere, even for fairly serious track fans. I've always been a fan of Solinsky, and had some overlap in Wisconsin, but this run is ridiculous.
Does anybody know from performance tables which is the better performance? 12:56 or 26:59?
