Deena WAS my favorite athlete but has turned into a bundle of excuses. She had a great career, but it is OVER, She needs to retire now. I don't even want to hear her excuses this time around. Please DO NOT run New York.

It's time.
She talks endlessly about wanting to be in races where the pace hammers from the start. Where was she today? What's in the bag of excuses today? It better not be the travel issue. Everyone had to cope with that one.
So painful to watch runners who don't realize it's time to let go and retire with grace.
How much did London pay her to run 2:36? A disgrace.

well the london media guide says money is 12 deep for the men and 10 deep for the woman, i doubt she was in the top 10, so i guess she made nothing today.

Would she have gotten an appearance fee?

as mentioned in another thread, you have to finish London to get your appearance fee
SHE DID FINISH. She ran 2:36:21

yes, in order to get her appearance fee she would finish, with her time she could be valued at around a minimum of $10 000 to appear
Tadessa could get way more maybe around $30 000
her time being her PB (not the time she ran today)as well as being the US record holder. With separate start for the Women, London can get better TV rights from the USA
It is time for her to hang it up.
Paige H has run faster than Deena's current race twicw in the past 4 months.
I'm interested to see what she says post-race...but I think you're right.
I bet she still ran faster than you could!
Its in the psychology of a loser to enjoy someone elses demise
Better to be a has been than a never been, and you are still a never been.
It has been 4 years since Deena has run a respectable Marathon but she has had a few things that make her appealing to a major race.
1. She was the only female American that was any good.
2. She is the American record holder.
3. She interviews well.
4. She has an Olympic Medal.
However, she is not currently as good as Magdalena, Kara, or Desiree Davila. She was smart to sign with NY last month as her days are numbered. She may still have a 2:25 left in her. but she will never see anything faster than that again. Take a close look at her last few years. She is not getting younger.

What is the matter with you guys? She's a pro athlete. She can continue as long as she wants. She is a great ambassador for the sport and win or lose, fast or slow, she is a classy person and a great role model.
The beauty of this sport is that the great ones can continue on into "old age" and run races and talk to people, mix with fans, etc.
Let up.
According to Flagpole and his procreation theories, she better retire and have her baby NOW or she'll be dealing with a kid with birth defects.
she was PISSED OFF when she finished. Tired, flat, whatever. Not a good day.
Does this mean she should hang 'em up? Thats personal.
Joan Benoit did....but didn't.
Appearance fee, Captain Obvious.
Not prize money.

Agreed. It's a personal decision that she will make. If she chooses to run marathons until she's 96, it's her call. Races can decide whether or not to keep offering money, but she can keep running as long as she wishes.

Bill Rodgers, Frank Shorter, Dick Beardsley, and even Joannie are all welcome faces at every road race in the world. I hope that Deena can also serve in that same role. However, I just hope she stops saying things like "I am in the best shape of my life" and similar things.
It kills me to say it, but her days as a threat in a major marathon are behind her.
Fact of the matter is that today she was the top male or female American. Yes do I think her days of running PR's are done, probably. Do I still think that she can be a good marathoner, yes. One thing I respect about her is that she is willing to mix it up at the big international marathons around the world. We have few people in this country that will do that. If she wants to retire then ok, if she doesn't we should probably continue to support her since she does make our country look good.
