Last night I ran a 5k road race in Europe. About 3k into it a 2 runners about 20 meters in front of me slightly cut a corner. I made a point to round the corner legally. I guy about 10 meters behind me cut the corner (even a bigger shortcut than the other two) and was about 10 meters in front of me after the turn. I got pissed and caught him. I spit on the ground (not on him), and called him a f----- cheater and threw in a mother------ for good measure. He proceeded to pick it up and beat me by 14 seconds. After the race I approached him and asked him why he cut and he would not answer me and walked away in a huff. Later I was waiting for some friends in the same area he was. I think he thought I was stalking him. Anyway, I approached him again and asked him why he cut the corner. He had some smartass remark about how I should speak German. I said, in German, that I don't speak German, but does he speak English. He told me to go away. I called him a cheater, a pussy and bushleague, told him to look that up, and then told him to never do that in a race again.
I was pretty angry. I think I let my anger get the best of me and it definitely threw off my race. Did I overreact? I think I lost some credibility by swearing and insulting - came off as a self-righteous American cowboy. But he clearly cut the course to gain an advantage. We were all racing at that pace, even though we finished in a pedestrian mid-16s. He outraced me and I don't have a problem with him finishing ahead, but I do have a problem with the course cutting. How can someone do that and feel fine about it? Makes him a bushleague pussy, right? (And by pussy I mean pusillanimous)
