Unspoken rules when running with the opposite gender?

Unless you are training with Deena Kastor, Kara Goucher, Shalane Flanagan, etc running with girls should be very easy and, here is the key CONVERSATIONAL. You don't run with girls because men and women are supposed to train together, you run with girls because you are both half naked and you are attracted to her. You should have kept the pace at 7:15-7:30 and talked the whole time, preferably about things other than running.

If the pace started out around 6:50 you should have said something like "You are going to have to take it easy on me, lets slow down." Now she feels like you are just an arrogant ass that wanted to break her because you are a guy. Why would that even appeal to you? 14 year old boys can run faster than 17:30, what kind of pleasure do you derive from breaking a girl on an easy day?

If by some miracle you get a chance to run with her, act like you are slightly nervous/shy in a good way and say something like "I guess I had just never run with a girl before and I didn't know what to do... want to try sometime else?"

My guess though is, you are dead in the water.

You were taking her at 60-70sec/mi slower than 5k race pace. You think it would be normal for a 14:30 guy to be hitting 5:40s on an easy run? Gebrselassie doesn't run so fast on his easy runs.

First, SHE asked YOU to go run, so she might be interested in you. Then her signals: not being able to keep up a conversation while running; telling you to go ahead if you wanted (code for "you're going too fast and making me look like a weakling, but I don't want to hold you back, but you're a jerk if you speed off") - which is what you did. You're a jerk. Did you tell her you thought she was a very good runner and you were trying to push her? That might've made her feel better, instead of thinking you were just trying to ditch her.

I don't even see this as having anything to do with running with a girl.

If I (being a guy who has run under 15 for 5K) was doing an easy run with with someone I wouldn't want them to start at 6:50 and keep picking it up. I'd let you go and do my own thing.

Now considering this was a girl running with you, you just come off looking like a jerk.

You were asked to "go for a run." Was it described as a tempo workout?

Actually that would be a dick head move even if you were running with a guy friend that asked you to go for a run.

Wow, that was an egotistical move. I wouldn't want to run with you anymore. I biked with a guy who destroyed me within the first 6 miles, then dropped me hard. I won't go with him again either.

Leaving aside the potential non-running issues, to me any time I run with another person I want to make sure we are on the same page in terms of pace. It just seems rude to say I will run with someone and then one takes off and leaves the other.

If it doesn't fit with what you want to do, then only run part of the way with her.

1) You were too stupid to realize that you were being a first class jackass.

lol, this sounds like it could be from a tv show something. A girl asks a guy she likes to run with her and he can't take a hint to save his life and has no social etiquette so he gets competitive, pounds her into the ground, and does not understand why she is mad afterwards. I could see michael scott doing that, but not a person in real life. You must have no game dude.

Actually, I am a girl. I just made the mistake of going riding with a moron, much like the OP. And I agree with both of you on this.

You guys should have discussed the purpose of the run. If it was meant to be "easy", you should have tagged along at HER easy pace (assuming she's slower), which would have been easy for both of you. I agree, conversational. 6:45-50 pace is in the gray zone and beyond an easy pace for a 17:30 5Ker. You came across as a dick and insecure to be picking up the pace like that, clearly knowing it was beyond her comfort zone. If I was her, I would have been more "impressed" if you put your ego aside and ran at HER pace (6:45-50 pace and faster is YOUR pace, not hers).

Oh yeah, regarding your Subject title, nothing should go unspoken when running with someone new, regardless of gender. Communication is important.

Wrong. Too much communication is always fatal to a good relationship. For example, dont ask her about her age, weight, sexual preferences, marital status, etc. etc. Just cut the pace back to sightly slower than hers and remark about her beautiful stride. You will go far my son.

When you agree to run with someone slower, you always run their pace; regardless of gender.
