Without thinking too long about it:
The Women
> Valerie Vili, NZ shot putter: I think the other women in the competition were in awe of her. Cool and fierce in the NZ black.
> Vivian Cheruiyot, Kenya 5,000 meters gold. Whether Defar was sick or whatever, Cheruiyot was splendid in the stretch. What a beautiful stride,...and smile.
> Lashinda Demus, U.S. 400 hurdles silver. I really like her. If she doesn't stumble over the last two hurdles, it might have been gold. Great great time nonetheless.
It pains me to leave my favorite, Yelena Isanbeyeva off the list...but she really ought to have swallowed her pride and congratulated the other girls.
Oh...and I have to give a 'homer' honorable mention, collectively to the U.S. middle distance runners...Barringer, Willard, Wurth-Thomas, Rowbury. They are representing!
The Men
> Steve Hooker, AU Pole Vault: His one jump to make the final--and painful aftermath--is going to be one of those indelible championship moments. And then he jumps just twice in the final to take the gold. Wow.
>Nick Symmonds, US 800: Even if he doesn't medal, he stays on my list. The dude is just a stone cold competitor. Fearless. Great talent. Great future.
> Usain Bolt, JA, 100/200: I can't ignore him. It's the attitude, and the talent. What on Earth will this guy do if he makes a serious run at the 400?
And a dude's 'homer' honorable mention, collectively to U.S. middle/distance runners...Tegenkamp, Solinsky, Ritz, and Lagat. They are also representing!
Can't wait to watch the men's 5,000 and 800 finals tomorrow!
