As far as I understood the article the numbers for Gebrselassie, Radcliffe and Mikitenko refer to marathons only.

I might add: 80k are not that much money if you're going to win the 500 k world marathon majors jackpot two years in a row.

Yeah, it is really sad. I know of high school kids that get signed for 300-400k out of high school to play baseball. Maybe the reason the E. Africans dominate is because to them the prize money is pretty amazing.
