Hello all,
I'm a long time lurker, looking for some tempo run training advice.
I am 41, male, training for 2:56 (6:45 pace) at Chicago.
My 5K PR is 18:17, HM PR 1:24:23, run last year on a hilly San Francisco course. (Last mile was in 6:15.)
I just did my first true tempo run of the season and was shocked to find I could barely maintain a 6:30 pace over 5 miles. It felt extraordinarily tough with HR hitting 91-92% of max at end. 3 weeks before I had run a 1:26:17 HM, the same pace, on a very bad day.
All the literature I’ve read says my tempo pace should be 6:20 (roughly 15K pace). No way I could hit that on the road for more than a mile in a non-race situation.
My track workouts would seem to indicate I’m in better shape. In the last 5 weeks I have been able to do workouts like:
3 x 2 miles @ 6:24 pace, 400 recovery
5 x 2000m cruise intervals in 7:53 or better (6:20 pace), 400 recovery.
5 x 1 mile in 5:55 or better, 400 jog
6x 800 in 2:54 or better
5 x 1000 avg 3:38, 400 jog
Those workouts were moderate to hard feeling, but not exhausting.
Other info:
I do 64-71 miles/week on 6 days of running. Weekly long run of at least 20 @ 8:00 (usually finishing @ 7:20) I double 2 days a week for volume. Also, this mileage is 50% higher than last year when I ran HM PR.
I tried searching through the forums but found little meant for non-elites. I appreciate their is a wealth of wisdom and experience on these boards. Any thoughts or advice?
Thanks,
jp
