Yes, after what happened in Athens, and given the recent history of sports (namely soccer) between China and Japan, the entire marathon course needs to be lined with police and high fences.

I am usually not a violent guy, but I don't know what I will do if any of the Japanese women are attacked. I know all 3 of them personally, and have trained with them all.

Attacking a male soccer player is one thing, and still not justifiable, but attacking a 100 pound woman who's already run 35km? That would be lower than anything imaginable.

There's over 1 million Japanese nationals who live in China today but still people get too excited and it's a good thing that droves of police will be there. Remember what happened to Deena at Chicago a few years ago hence.

Japanese are not subject to randomn hostile acts in China - most Chinese would give their left arm to live in Japan, and they are the largest immigrant population in Japan.
