I didn't realize what she achieved in that race until now. One of the Russians she beat was the WR holder; the other would win the Olympic 1500 meter gold less than 5 months later in Munich. And she also defeated the reigning AR holder in the race, who went under her old record as well. A 4:38 mile on that crappy track is on a par with Lindgren's 8:40, and that time still stands alone 36 years later. Reminds me of Ryun beat Snell.
Thanks for posting that; I don't know why that video only has 1400+ views, that is a classic.
Thanks for the link!
What a great race!
can't believe wejo hasn't put this video up somewhere, especially after all the great stuff at the California state meet recently.
Actually, her 4:38.5 was a WORLD record at the time. There was another thread on this amazing performance a few months ago.

The CA state meet made me think of what Heald and Lindgren were able to do. Imagine a 16 year old today taking down a world record holder and an Olympic champ in the same race.
wow!!! wow!
Awesome footage.
Jim McKay's calling the race...and Doris getting passed by another Amwerican...and gettign beat!!
Great race.
I never knew.
Thank you, Carvinvore for introducing me to Debbie.

Hi Patti!
I trained and raced with Debbie on occasion back in the day and we had this awesome trip when we got her to run for our SFVTC team in '76 to Miami for nationals. We had way too much fun. Wonder what she is up to now????
This deserves a bump. Billy Mills-eque performance!!!
Bump for absolutely crazy.
Holy Shit!
Carnivore, Thanks for diggnig this up. What a pleasure to watch. I wonder how Debbie did at the collegiate level? Anybody know?
