Coaching Jobs in Charlotte (HS or college)

In my experience a coaching position will not help you pay for grad school - with the amount you will get after taxes, and the amount of time you put in, you probably make well under minimum wage (if you look at it in an hourly perspective).

Schools prefer to hire teachers as coaches. With that said, you can get hired as a teacher without a certificate (its called "lateral entry") but you are required to get a certificate within three years of teaching.

NC teacher salary is pretty meager - but there is a big job demand, so getting a job shouldn't be too hard.

I hope no one confuses me with you (I'm an Ole Miss Alumni), your comments were harsh and misplaced in my view. I live in Charlotte currently and went to Ole Miss as well. I came to Charlotte after I graduated at from Ole Miss (91') and have been impressed for the most part with the Charlotte Mecklenburg school system schools (where all 3 of my kids attend). Like any big city they have their problems and some schools are better than others but its obvious from your references to schools and whats new that you haven't been around for a while. The previous poster is correct in who the better cross country schools are currently (Ardrey Kell, Myers Park, North Meck, etc).

Charlotte is a fast growing city so I'd advise the oroginal poster to keep his eyes and ears open for possible opportunities at schools getting ready to open in the next few years.

Additionally Queens College here in Charlotte is in the middle of a resurgence in their program with their new coach and can be seen prominately on the local greenways on the weekends practicing. There are several other smaller colleges in and around the Charlotte area with XC programs that may be looking for GA's to help with or train with the team. The original poster may want look into that as well.

Ah so I see, I'm the dense and ignorant one. I lives a mile away from South Meck nearly all of my young life. Did you ever go there? No. It is a very black school, so much so that the locals called it "Planet of the Apes." You have no idea what youre talking about.

No, its your conduct on this thread that makes you a bad representative. The original poster asked a question about something he is doing now in 2008 and you are making exagerations about things your percieved as a kid 7 + years ago. Add to this your name calling and surly attitude toward other posters and yes I think you are a bad representative of Ole Miss. My opinion.

No actually I was not in a fraternity. I was captain of the Cross Country team and trained daily with the likes of Brian Pope, Pablo Sierra and George Kersh.

I may not have been around when you were here, but I do know what I'm talking about when it comes to today. The following are all facts:

I went to East Meck, less than two years ago.

East Meck has less than 50% black students.

East Meck has more black students than South Mecklenburg. Don't believe me? Just take a look at each of the surrounding neighborhoods.

I'll side with MTH when I say that you probably shouldn't use information based on when you lived here as a kid. We both live here now, and CMS is on the upswing.

I'm not here to fight, it's just I get defensive when people leave schools just because they're "scared they might get shot by black people." It's been bad in the past; I know parents who have made up addresses to send their kid to Myers Park rather then East.

There is a good chance that the XC and distance job at UNC Charlotte will be open from what I hear. Its an assistants job, but I'm sure it pays well. Call the the athletic department there and talk things over with them. The present coach is generally keeping the runners at the same times they ran in high school and his uncalled for antics are soon to land him out of a job. I think you would need a level 1 T&F certification for that. If anything, maybe they would make you a grad assistant. Also, Scott Simmons at Queens Univ might be in need of a grad assistant.

South Meck has nice neighborhoods surrounding it as well. I lived in Park Crossing, but the fact is that they still do busing.

I graduated from South Meck quite a while ago and it was a pretty good mix of whites and blacks. I never felt threatened there. I thought it was a great school. Our football team won the State championship one year and our Softball team won the State Championship my senior year. We thought Myers Park was full of rich preppie snobs.
