About to get underway. Japan still has no medal at this championships. Maybe here. Updates here. For those watching.

And they are off.
Trotting out of the stadium. Looks like much better weather than for the men's race. Seems quite a bit faster than the men's race too.
and in the UK the BBC can't be arsed to cover the first hour on TV while their 'interactive' service is inactive and the promised radio coverage has also gone awol. what a shambles
keep the updates coming !
I don't like the idea of 71 runners going around an 8 lane 400 meter track 3 times before setting out on the course. Does anyone have an estimate of how far out the back of the pack runners were strung out from the front-runners? There must have been women as far out as lanes 5 and 6 on the turns. That adds up to a few hundred feet over the course of 3 laps.

eurosport is not too clear but eurosport spain is
Still a large pack but Japan(3) and China(2) leading the way with the first 5k going by in 18:27. There's a very small gap to a second gap with Ndereba.
18:27 or so at 5k. Big pack with two Japanese leading. Close behind are Zhou and Bogomolova. Already small trail packs are forming. Ndereba is in the second pack. I don't think all of the medalists will be in this lead pack.
Looks to be about 24 in lead pack at 5k. Another 10 seconds back is the next group. Much different than the men's race.
The second pack has about a dozen women. Probably some medalists in that pack.
anyone else not getting wcsn to work? I can see it on the Eurosport Spain site (thanks) but don't know the language!
The second pack is only about 20 meters back, and they just seem comfortable there. Close enough to see what is happening, but not out of contact. They are just keeping out of all the thrashing elbows in the big front pack.
ok now it works
thanks !
36:23 at 10k. Not much change. A big lead pack of about 2 dozen. A close chase pack of about 7. I consider them all one group. A big gap back to the next runners.
I think all of the Chinese and Japanese runners are in the lead packs. Lots of Romanians too.
any brits?
Mara Yamamuchi (sp?) was with the lead pack through 10k. I think she's still somewhere in the pack but I can't see her.
Mara Yamauchi is tucked in on the inside in the shades
any news on the weather conditions ?
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
