As far as a straight up 1600, then probably its Ryan Hall, who ran 4:02.62 on June 2, 2001 to win the Ca State HS meet in Sacramento

Well, Jim Ryun would have Webb's time beat, as he broke 4 in the mile in a hs only race.

Jim Ryan has him beat for the mile distance, but he has no official 1600 times. Remember, conversions do not count for records. Also, Ryans HS only competition was a mile. I am looking for official 1600 times

Do you know any meets other than HS that have 1600 en routes splits or that have 1600 races? Maybe in Gebs or Komens sub-8 two miles, but they probably didnt have 1600 splits since the start was before the finish line, most likely had mile splits. And of course, we all know that hundreds of performers and performances have come through 1600 faster than 3:59.91, but if there is no offocial time, its not a record.

Using the perspective of the high school associations of most states with regard to the 1600/mile problem, I think most would consider the 1600 WR to be: 3:43.13 Hicham El Guerrouj.

The metric races always confuse me. Four laps around the track makes a lot more sense than the 1500, unless of course you go with the idea that 1500 is a more metric number (hopefully you get the idea). But in that case, why the hell do they run an 800 instead of a 1000meter race? Or a 400meter race rather than a 500meter race? Why is the 200meter race still around? Either go the metric route (like the 1500meters) or races that actually follow the idea of a 400meter track, like 200meters (1/2 lap), 400 meters ( 1 lap), 800meters (2 lap), and 1600meters (4 laps).

Hicham El Guerrouj holds the world record at in the 1600 at 3:43.13. That is the world record in the mile and that is the unofficial world record in the 1600 meters. That is not a converted time. There is no way that Guerrouj ran slower than 3:43.13 for a distance that was on the way to the mile, so that is the world record

In that race Hicham ran a small portion of one of the turns in the 2nd lane, so he actually ran 1761 yards. Since no official enroute splits were taken at either 11.22 yards before the finish line, nor 1 yard before the finish line, he does not hold the world record for either the 1600 or the mile.

Steve Magness ran 4:01.58 for the 1600m at the 15-5a district meet in 2003

There's never been an 'official' time for 1600 from any pro mile race. Why would they?

Why would you agree with him though. He wrote that the 1600 record is El G's 3:43.13. That doesn't even make sense! It's the 1600 and 1609.xx record?

If 3:43.13 was the 1600 record, the mile would be closer to 3:44.4.

actually, it is the answer. the iaaf recognizes records for odd distances that way: if the world record time is lower for a distance LONGER than the distance in question, that is recognized as the official "world best."

for example, the 190m dash world best is exactly the same as Michael Johnson's 200m world record.

so unless someone ran an actual 1600m race in under 3:43.13, that's the official record.

Well that makes a lot of sense... So is the 1550m record 3:43.13 too?
