This guy has been discussed briefly on Lets Run recently, but I don't think he has got the attention that his results have deserved......
Name: Gideon Ngatuny. DOB Oct 86 (20 year old). Runs in Japan for the Nissin Foods corporate team.
Three noticeable recent results, all in Ekiden events.
1) Mid-November, East Japan district champs
- Ran 17.4k 4th stage in a record time of 48.54, beating fellow Kenyan Josephat Ndambiri (who holds Japanese 10k all-comers record of 27.04) by a minute and a half.... By my calculations that would equate to a 10 mile time of about 45 mins dead.
2) 23rd November. Chiba Ekiden
- Ran 10k second stage in a new record time of 26.51 (Previous best by Martin Mathathi of 27.12... same season that Mathathi came third in the World X country champs long race behind Bekele and Tadesse)
3) 1st January 2007, Maebashi 100k Ekiden
- Ran 11.8k third stage in a mind-boggling 30.43!!!! in doing so turned a 61 second deficit into a 90 second advantage.... My quick ratio calculations suggest that his 10k time would have been 26.02!!! I'm sure there must have been a substantial decline, but that is still a blistering time...
Possible challenge to Bekele over 10k on the track in 2007 ?? ... or a contender for a new 10 mile or half marathin WR ?? You heard it here first!
