VO2 max data from world class runners 7/31/2006 6:58AM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
Does anybody have any raw data from VO2 max tests of world class runners they can provide me, without breaking any ethics/irb/hipaa rules? I will not be sharing the data with anybody, just using it to educate myself on a few things and make some comparisons in my mind between top runners and non-elites. Breath-by-breath text or excel files of everything (ie, respiratory variables, VO2, VCO2, FeO2, etc.) is what I am interested in.

I do not have to know names of athletes, etc. Just that they are world class, and if possible their times... And most importantly, I don't want to receive any data in an unethical way or by violating privacy or policies!

Thanks!

Shorter 71.3
Pre 84.4
Nick Rose 79.0
Gary Tuttle 82.7
Mike Manley 76.1
Kardong 77.4
Kenny Moore 74.2
Galloway 73.0 (Should have been higher but he kept taking walking breaks in the middle of the test)
World class?

Thanks for the info, but I am not looking for a single number, but rather somthing that looks like this... A continuous stream of data with multiple variables. Something that usually needs to be in Excel or ascii format, etc.

Thanks so much, Dr. Daniels. I will be sure to be in touch with you after August 15th. I have tested guys in the 14:30's on up range and it would be great to see some data from the best in the world, as I know you have tested them. Thanks again!

The fellows who measured it and published the results are pretty solid researchers.

I have it on good authority that the metabolic cart used was way off, that it was always reading high.

the great VO2 myth where everyone and their mom puts too much emphasis on that #. I gotta ask, if it really is a max then how come only like 20-30% show the so called VO2 plateau phenomenon? Hmm could it be something else stops the athletes before they hit that so called max.

The book Lore of Running has a list of VO2 maxes of world-class runners. I don't have the book in front of me, but I'd recommend owning it if you don't already have it.

I would like to say that the V02max doesn't mean that much, it does some but not as much as people make it out to be.

Having said that most people will probably say- you're just saying that because yours isn't that high (which is true- 67).

List of some V02maxs and what they were able to accomplish with their max O2 consumption values:

John Ngugi 85 5x World CC champ
Derek Clayton 69.7 2:08:34 WR (1969 WR, lasted 12 years)
Peter Snell 72 mile WR
Gary Tuttle 82.7 2:17 marathon
Steve Prefontaine 84.4 3:54 mile
Willie Mtolo 70.3 2:08:15 marathon

TLOR lists Craig Virgin as 90, and explains that VO2 has nothing to do with running efficiency.
Derek Clayton, with his 69, was a monster of efficiency.

amstrong's number fluctuate between 73-85 during the 7 winning tours. the numbers are from the OTC at lake placid.
