Our cross country team was a part of a research project. We had our forced vital capacities measured using a spirometer. Now, I am the same age as another guy on my team who is a much faster runner than me. The one is a sub-4:20 miler aand I can barely break five minutes. However, my FVC was 6.0 liters while his was 5.1 liters. Considering that we have similar workouts and everything, why are his time so much faster although I have a higher FVC? I have read studies in which there is an indirect relationship between distance running times and FVC (higher FVC=faster times). What can I specifically work on to improve my times, or am I completely off base on this topic in thinking that FVC is linked to performance? I am curious.
