^^This. My children took year-round art, science, Spanish and music/violin instruction (beginning at age 2) at their daycare center which went through grade K. The staff were wonderful... knowledgeable, fun, nurturing... and became our extended family.
But, few have access to such facilities, sadly.

Most daycare staff have a lot more experience looking after young children than most parents do. Being a parent doesn't make you an expert at bringing up children

Nothing that people do is natural.
A human drinking milk that came from a cow is pretty unnatural.
It's not like your first instinct is to suck on a cow's teet.
But I love cookies and cow's milk.
Kids at that age love their routine. You can get them used to just about anything if you make it part of the daily routine (my daughter asks if I'm going to drop her off at daycare on the weekends. Um, no). I'd give it a bit more time.
As to what's natural and unnatural - just about every child raising practice has been typical at some point in time. It wasn't all that long ago that fathers were completely uninvolved with their child's upbringing. Wealthy families would employ nurses (even wet-nurses) and barely even see their children. Glasses, AC, and penicillin are all unnatural and I think that's just fine.
Give it a bit more time. If it's not working out then try something else, but there is a good chance that in a week or so you'll drop your daughter off and she'll run to the teacher or start playing and not even notice you.

If I'm completely honest, like most people with their kids at day care, I don't have a clue what happens to my dog at the kennel. They say they walk him and give him exercise but I really don't know for sure. He came home with kennel cough one time. I bet parents can relate to that, bringing home all the viruses from their day care kennel. I just hope for the best and enjoy my vacations.

Don't know about your kennel.
Do know about my child's day care. I stop in at random times. The kids are always safe and involved in appropriate activities. My child loves it and is thriving

No...you are comparing adapting to slavery to adapting to being put in daycare as a 13 month old.
To use your logic, people also adapt to a paper cut or living in a new city or going to a new school or working at a new job...all common things that might have a brief period of stress but that are things we as humans can cope with. It is a rare child who is actually traumatized by day care.
Again, I believe if you can swing it that it's better to NOT put your child in day care (I consider day care to be prior to age 3 or 4...within 2 yeas of kindergarten, it is preschool), but your linkage of day care to slavery, etc. was WAY too much, brother.

For the record, I do not criticize any parents for their choices, whether it's daycare, a nanny or staying at home.
With my daughter I will try daycare this week again and see if things get better. At most, she will be spending 20h/week (3 days) and the rest she will be with me or my wife. Last year, I didn't make a lot because I was with her all the time, so I was hoping I could work more this year with her at daycare part-time. If it doesn't work, we will do with less. We are not big spenders anyway.

Do what we did after we saw how terrible the day cares were in our area (quite affluent part of SF). Hire a nanny.
I guess it's okey and natural for 13 month old go to daycare, why not? If you need to go back to work, your conscience should be clear.
1. It's good training for Independence. Theirs and yours.
2. If you choose carefully, you get trained child care professionals, with multiple sets of eyes on your child and the other caretakers.
3. You and your wife and your family will probably make less developmentally-informed decisions than they will.
4. My kids were in child care before 6 months and they turned out better than other kids with or without stay at home parents, by a lot.
