This is not true. College kids do serious drinking and end up with crazy BAC levels, but are not alcoholics.
Never had my BAC tested, but I'm 6'2, 185ish. I've thrown up twice from drinking, once I consumed a 750ml bottle of 40% rum in about 45minutes, and the other time I consumed slightly more than half of a bottle of a 750ml 151proof Bacardi in about 2 hours.
An online calculator puts those at 0.385 and 0.388, but obviously those are just estimates.
Me and 3 other guys drank an entire giant bottle of that Absolut Vodka at a beach house one summer.
I thought I was going to die until I passed out. We woke up the next morning, 3 of us had puked and one of my friends was sleeping in the driveway.
We're big guys btw, all of us 6'0, 200 pounds. Good times.

In November of last year I got a DUI and blew a .22 blacked-out, incoherent, sputtering drunk at the police station. Over the next eight months I developed a serious problem with alcoholism. In July there was a warrant out for my arrest and I called the police station and turned myself in; when I arrived at the station I was perfectly lucid and coherent, walking a straight line, and blew .24. That increase in tolerance shows how serious a condition my drinking had become. I'm certain I hit .30+ at least a few times from May through July, and on one occasion, when I combined vodka with clonazepam, a benzodiazepine, I probably entered that lethal-range.
Alcoholism is awfully unfortunate. As a nervous, introverted person I wish more than anything I could be happily drunk all the time with no negative rebound. But accute alcohol withdrawal is one of the most terrible things I've had to endure, and arrests are no fun, either. I hope some day I'm able to drink like a normal person, in moderation.

Three girls came up to me at college the next day and seemed to know me. I had no idea who they were
After that decided to hold back slightly so I wasn't seeing the stars the next day - but not so much that the girls bit didn't happen again
All this sanctimonious stuff about drink is garbage unless you are weak willed. I would just drink when socialising and usually go for it on big nights out
Now I'm married my wife bring me one beer on Fri and that's it. Every couple of months I go out for a big booze up hitting the clubs with a friend

I was an alcoholic and I don't drink anymore, so thanks buddy. A lot of people aren't alcoholics and can drink reasonable amounts, it is ridiculous to suggest no one drink alcohol and if you do drink you likely have a problem.

This is how I feel about alcohol. I am 20 and have never drunk at all--and don't ever plan to. My grandfather's life was ruined by alcohol, which in turn ruined the first 25 years of my mom's life, and a good portion of my grandma's life. I've heard horrible stories from both of them about the awful things that would go on that I won't repeat here.
I personally don't understand what is so great about alcohol and what the big deal is--why does everyone feel they have to drink?? because everyone else does?? I'm in college and have been around my fair share of drunk people, and they are annoying to be around in my opinion. I have friends who drink, and when they drink, I just don't accompany them. I just don't understand why people need alcohol to have a good time.
And on a different side of the coin, it can be quite an expensive habit to support.

That said, we don't pump stomachs anymore. Stopped doing that about 10 years ago. Now we just intubate you if you have no gag reflex (stick a breathing tube down your throat), and give you lots of fluids and vitamins. Otherwise, we just watch you.
There are "regular" alcoholics I see in my Emergency Department on almost a nightly basis. Routinely have alcohol levels over .40 or .50. We watch them for a bit, and let them become clinically sober - these guys function at a baseline 0.3 level. Anything lower and they start seizing.
I've seen levels over 0.6 a few times. 0.83 is the highest ever seen at our hospital.

Again, people can drink responsibly and not get drunk and have alcohol ruin their lives. Obviously your grandfather couldn't but a lot of people can. Countless studies have been done showing the benefits of moderate alcohol consumption. I say this all as someone who can't just have one beer and doesn't drink anymore. But others can and it is ridiculous to cast judgement about alcohol and all who drink it because a few people let it ruin their lives.

Kind of silly to say that you "personally don't understand what is so great about alcohol." You haven't even tried it, so why would you expect to understand?
It's fun for most people, end of story. In certain situations, alcohol makes things drastically more fun. If it didn't, it wouldn't be consumed as copiously as it is. Seems fairly obvious. Of course it's tragic when people are dependent on it, but it can also be enriching, socially and even health-wise. Being 20, you have a pretty limited perspective, so just try to be open-minded about things you don't yet have a grasp on.
Back in the days when I had a tougher liver, I once drank over a case of beer. Afterwards, while driving around I got stopped at a dui check point, but because I was an experienced drunk, I passed the sobriety tests and didn't have to face a breath test. phew. Still drink, but that was the last time I drove so intoxicated. The 0.08 limit is a joke, though. Much too low. I'm a better driver at 0.08 than 75% of the people out there are stone sober.
Captain, you are probably wise to stay away if you have a family history of alcohol abuse, but it isn't inherently bad to drink.
When you get older, you will see more people consume alcohol in a more responsible manner. I didn't drink very often in college, mainly due to running. I drank more in high school than college. When I did drink, I got shit housed. As I got older, I realized that I could enjoy a couple glasses of wine or a few beers without much detriment to my running, my health or my productivity.
Having a glass of wine or two with my wife while we cook dinner (after the kids are in bed) is a great way to relax after a long day or work and a hard run. Is it necessary? No. But it is nice.
I have no idea what my highest BAC might have been b/c I have never been given a Breathalyzer, but I know that it must have been pretty damn high one New Year's Eve shortly after college. I (already half drunk from drinking at dinner) purchased a 5th of Kettle One and finished the entire bottle in 3 hours. I woke up at my girlfriend's place around 3am with vomit all over myself and the floor. She was asleep next me on the couch with a trashcan full of vomit at her feet and vomit all over her new dress. I literally felt like I should be dead. I had no recollection of anything that had happened, and wasn't sure if the vomit was mine or hers. The last thing I could remember was getting into a cab at like 6:00pm.
Apparently, we had to leave our party and go home at 10:30. I had been drinking the vodka out of the bottle like Nick Cage in Leaving Las Vegas. She missed the ball drop and instead spent her NYE helping me not choke on my vomit. She said I was the life of the party for about an hour, but I quickly went downhill and she managed to get me out of there before things got bad. I vomited in the cab 5 seconds after we got in. Had she waited any longer to take me home, that would have been the dance floor. It was a formal party. Tuxes, etc. Luckily, she claims I did not do anything stupid. Everyone I have spoken with over the years thinks the whole thing is hilarious b/c they thought I was just having fun.
We had been dating for about 3 months at the time.
We ended up getting married about 2 years later. At 38 years old, I have not had an incident like that to this day. It honestly changed me. I still shudder to think about how bad it could have gone.
