Another one bites the dust, Delaware Men's Xc and Track cut

Sorry to see this happening to you guys. It is very sad to see the Colonial Athletic Conference continue to get destroyed on the men's side...towson, jmu and now delaware as well.

It would seem that there has to be a better was to make title IX work. Cutting opportunies for the men is not the way to go. What a crock of crap!!!

After adding women's crew and cutting indoor track two years ago, they are already in compliance for a few years more. Since Bernard Muir was quoted as saying it was not a money issue in 2008, and since the school has made bold plans to revamp the athletic facilities, it seems that they should be able to add women's teams without cutting men's teams. Further, since women's golf will now become a varsity sport, the University of Delaware would certainly be in compliance with Title IX if they kept the team around for 3 more years. At least they should let the kids whom they enticed to come to the school run for the remainder of their careers. For some perspective, before 2008 they did not cut a men's team for 10 years and had no Title IX repercussions .

Nice. Break the news via email while people are away. Then remind them of the policy that athletes can't talk to media unless they are picked. These people don't sound too great.

Ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous.

That really sucks.

As a former victim of a collegiate XC team being cut (UCF XC in 2007), that email is almost a cut and paste of what our AD sent to us. I'm guessing they purposely make these decisions during breaks so they don't HAVE to hold meetings, have uncomfortable confrontations, etc.

The greed of football keeps pushing mens sports aside. When UD lost the national championship I was smiling ear to ear. I hope they never win a game again! Horrible for these young men. Good luck guys!

Another case of equality through inequality.

Sad to see them go, it really is. An even cheaper and more insulting method of being notified by the AD. Get some balls, do your job and meet with these kids face-to-face. Very gutless and cowardly on his behalf! Damn, atleast give them a chance to defend their sport and come up with a reason/way to keep themselves varsity there.

Title IX and the women's sports movement is destroying athletics in this country.

Hopefully their football team will enjoy the sucesses JMU has enjoyed since cutting their programs and directing the funds to the pipe dream of playing BCS football....

I am a JMU grad and one of my favorite things is when the fundraisers call asking from money. "Sure I will send a check right after the XC and track programs are restored"

I'm sure the Delaware football coach's bonuses for his team making/blowing the Division I JV national championship came due and the AD had no choice but to cut the team.

Knew this was coming when they told us starting in February we can't use the indoor track for practice until 9pm. They were just phasing the team out. Not surprising but a very sad day.

I take it you're a current member of the team? What do you plan to do now?

It's unfortunate that they have removed all hope from all of the non-rostered members as well because now we have no hope of ever contributing to a team. The only option left is to transfer, which could be very costly and detrimental to our academic careers.

What is really offensive to me is the instructions that team members must coordinate media calls through the University's media flacks. Sure, I can understand that kind of instruction with a major university at issue and involving team members of a minor sport. Or at least I can understand that these instructions are at least designed to protect the "brand" and all of the money that comes with it. But, heck, to impose such a heavy hand on guys that have just been left without a team? Forget it - I would be talking to the media freely - commenting on the injustices of the way Title IX has been implemented, and frankly, how this incident is just one more in a stream of many as to how education (and this begins early on now) is unkind to boys and young men.

I like how the letter says that no student athlete may speak with the media. What will they do, pull your scholarship for this semester if you speak with the media? I would probably speak and worry about the consequences later. There isn't much they could do.

Heres some articles on this and also the University fails to mention all the money they have spent on purchasing new buildings on contaminated grounds and building new facilities as well as an engineering lab. Clearly they have money.
