reporter asking Ryan Hall whether he could have won Sunday's ING NYC
Marathon. Things turned serious when Amy Shipley of the Washington Post
thankfully brought up Ryan Shay's death again. (At the start of the
conference Ryan Hall in his opening statement had started to address
the issue and Richard Finn, the NYRR media guy, walked behind Ryan and
tapped him on the shoulder. There was then an awkward pause and Richard
said that there would be an update on Ryan Shay, a runner who had
"dropped out" of the Trials later. Many in the room already knew that
Shay had died.) Fortunately, Mary Wittenberg the head of the NYRR came
out and her class and compassion for Ryan helped restore some
perspective to what had happened on Saturday as she got emotional. Then
