Mary Wittenberg to Become Head of ING NYC Marathon, NY Road Runners By David Monti (c) 2005 Race Results Weekly, all rights reserved March 9, 2005 The New York Road Runners announced today that Mary Wittenberg would be promoted to president and chief executive officer effective April 1, succeeding Allan Steinfeld. In addition, Wittenberg would succeed Steinfeld as the race director of the ING New York City Marathon, the flagship event of the NYRR. "It is with great pride and humility that I take over the leadership of the world's greatest marathon and road running organization to lead us into the future," said Wittenberg, 42, who became associate race director of the marathon in 2004 in addition to her duties as executive vice-president and chief operating officer of NYRR, a position she has held since 2000. Steinfeld will assume the newly created role of vice-chairman and executive director of the marathon. "As I begin to step back from the organization that I have called home for the last 27 years, I couldn't be happier to know that I have left its future in Mary's hands," said Steinfeld, 58, who joined the staff of NYRR in 1978, became president in 1993, and became CEO and marathon race director in 1994. Steinfeld was a protegé of ING New York City Marathon founder, Fred Lebow. While it was always clear that Wittenberg would eventually take over the reigns from Steinfeld, it was the timing which was not. The issue became further complicated when Steinfeld was recently hospitalized for double pneumonia, and spent more than a week in intensive care. He has since returned to the office on a part-time basis as he continues to recover. Wittenberg, the former Mary Robertson, is an avid runner and won the 1987 Marine Corps Marathon in 2:44:36. She also competed in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials Marathon the following year.
