Alan Webb Opens 2005 Season with 13:30 5k PR, Win at Penn Relays
LetsRun.com
April 29, 2005

Alan Webb opened his 2005 outdoor season by winning the 5000m at the Penn Relays in a personal best of 13:30.25.

Webb followed a rabbit through an opening 1600 of 4:17.7 (13:25 pace). By 5 laps the rabbit was done for the night, and it was a two man race between Webb and Joseph Koskei of Kenya. Webb continued to lead through 2 miles (3200m) in 8:38.6 (13:30 pace).

The pace had slowed a little since the rabbit departed and at this point Koskei regained the lead. However, he did not up the ante and Webb remained behind Koskei at the bell. Webb continued to sit on Koskei until the final turn, where he kicked home with a 27.1 for the final 200m to win convincingly in 13:30.25 to Koskei's 13:32.98. 3rd place was over thirty seconds behind Webb.

The 13:30 represents a 16 second pr for Webb who ran 13:46.31 last year to win Penn. His strong final 200m and the fact he had to lap numerous runners indicates that this miler could run a lot faster at 5000m.

Webb's focus however is the mile. Webb told the Associated Press after the race, "I'm a miler. I just wanted to get the season off with some good strength work... I wanted to run significantly faster then I did last year, and I think I did that pretty well."

Next up for Webb is the 800m leg of a sprint medley relay on Saturday at Penn. Webb also was slated for a 1500m, Sunday half way across the country in Stanford, but now his name has been removed from the race preview at Stanford, so we believe he has withdrawn.
