Galen Rupp Sets High School Record at 3k Oregon high schooler Galen Rupp ran 8:03.67 in Canada yesterday to set an American record for 3000m while finishing 3rd at the Kajacks International Track Meet in British Columbia. Rupp broke John Trautmann's previous record of 8:05.8 set in 1986. (Trautmann went on to star at Georgetown and run the 5000m at the 1992 Olympics) Rupp's run converts to 8:42 for 2 miles, which would put him 5th on the all-time list, still 6 seconds behind Jeff Nelson's 8:36.44 high school record in 1979. Rupp has the fastest time in the nation for high schoolers from 1500m to 5k this year. Click here for Rupp's splits from oregonlive message board. Rupp is expected to race Footlocker National High School Cross Country Champ Matt Withrow over 5k this Saturday at the USATF junior championships in the heat of College Station, Texas. *Full Kajacks Results here
