I put them on and did a 2-day, 28-mile, 11K overall vertical gain trail run as if they were already broken in. The sole is rigid enough to have performed well on very technical terrain (granite mountains, trails included rocky, rooty steep climbs as well as descents on loose gravel and mud and grass), but I could feel the terrain well enough to respond to near-missteps when it got dark outside.

They have a rather large toe box which had originally been a concern for me because I have narrow feet and it took some experimenting with tightening the laces just right to keep my foot in place. I had been wearing Salomons for years in a 10.5 at Salomon folks’ insistence that an 11 would be too big and so this was my first 11. The local running shoe store guy had remeasured my feet and suggested a larger size. I’m glad I listened. My foot stayed put and I didn’t kill my toes the way I normally had been on fast steep descents for years.
