“Please don’t allow me to go to jail”: Gut-Wrenching video released of Sha’Carri Richardson pleading with police
By LetsRun.comA gut-wrenching police video showing former 100-meter world champion and Olympic 4×100 gold medalist Sha’Carri Richardson pleading with an officer not to be taken to jail after allegedly driving more than 100 miles per hour in her Aston Martin has been released.
Richardson was cited for going 104 mph in a 65-mph zone. She was arrested and taken to jail under a Florida law that allows drivers exceeding 100 mph or driving recklessly to be detained.
The video, obtained by Fox Digital and other outlets, shows Richardson passing a police cruiser on the highway. After passing the officer, she uses her turn signal to go in front of him and then accelerates to over 100 mph, if what the video shows is accurate. The video then shows her subsequent interaction with Orange County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Gerald McDaniels.
Richardson appears in good spirits when initially stopped. But McDaniels immediately changes the tone.
“I’d wipe that smile off your face,” he says.
During their exchange, the officer details the alleged violations.
“You’re going to jail for dangerous excessive speeding”
“You’re driving at 104 miles an hour in a 65-mile-an-hour zone with subpar equipment, flashing people to get out of your lane, following too close, using every lane to pass everybody, cutting me off, passing a car on the inside shoulder with your hazard lights on,” he says.
Richardson offers several explanations for her speed, including an underinflated tire.
The encounter becomes emotional once Richardson realizes she might go to jail under the Florida law for driving more than 50 mph over the limit or recklessly above 100 mph.
“You’re going to jail for dangerous excessive speeding,” he tells her.
Richardson then repeatedly pleads for leniency.
“I really want to work with you, sir. I am a law-abiding citizen,” she says. “Sir, please don’t allow me to go to jail.”
The officer makes it clear he isn’t changing his mind.
“Please, sir, I’m begging you,” Sha’Carri says. She becomes highly emotional as she keeps pleading not to go to jail. In the video released, the officer remains calm and says Sha’Carri has two options: going to jail in his car or in a “cage car”.

Later, her boyfriend, fellow world champion Christian Coleman, arrived on the scene and was also arrested. According to The Athletic, Coleman is facing charges of resisting an officer and possession of drug paraphernalia after police searched his vehicle and allegedly found a glass pipe containing a “small amount of green leafy plant material.”
Video of Coleman’s interaction with police has not yet been released.
Olympian and training partner Twanisha Terry also arrived and was cited but not arrested after providing identification.
