Quotes from NCAA:
Wednesday, June 6, 2018 – Day One Championships
Denzel Comenentia, Georgia – Men’s Hammer Throw National Champion – 76.41m
(250-8)
On his performance…
“There are some great competitors, so it was still nerve-racking, but after the 76-meter
throw I felt great, and I solidified the win. Everything just lined up perfectly. A couple
throws before I was just trying to find my rhythm and on the fifth throw, everything fell into
place at the right time. It felt good, and on my scream, you could tell I was happy.”
On what it means to win before the Hayward Field redesign…
“It means a lot. My coach told me about the great throwers that have been at Hayward
Field. To win here the last time the NCAA championship will be in this stadium feels great.”
Chris Nilsen, South Dakota – Men’s Pole Vault National Champion – 5.83m (19-1½ )
On feeling as good as he looked…
“I felt really good today. It’s always fun to come out here with those really good guys. I felt
really good coming into today and injury free, and a lot of motivation from my home from
my wife and my baby boy.”
On his one miss and if it bothered him…
“Every mistake you make or every miss you have is just a learning lesson for you, so I
talked to my coach Derek Miles and made some adjustments, cleared the bar, and just kept
going through the motions.”
On the adjustments he made…
“[Derek Miles] actually moved me up a pole because he said, ‘You’re going to bring it now
so let’s go,’ and I went up the pole and made it.”
Zack Bazile, Ohio State – Men’s Long Jump National Champion – 8.37m (27-5½)
On his mindset coming into the meet…
“Coming into this meet, nobody was really talking about me. I kind of liked coming in as the
underdog. I wasn’t really talking to anybody and wasn’t really getting any looks.”
On getting a good mark so early in the competition…
“I came back a little more aggressive on my second jump. I definitely thought that people
were going to chase me especially (Florida’s) KeAndre (Bates) and Grant (Holloway) and I
have a lot of respect for them, so I knew I couldn’t let up until the competition was over.”
Denzel Comenentia, Georgia – Men’s Shot Put National Champion – 20.61m (67-7½
)
On winning two titles in one day…
“It feels amazing. It came so unexpectedly, and we’ve had some great competitors. To get
the double, it feels absolutely amazing.”
On his mentality going into shot put…
“I actually just started pushing, I felt like my timing was off on the first two throws, and on
the fourth one I kind of missed it, and on the fifth one everything lined up perfectly.”
On what was different from last year…
“I just got bigger, stronger, faster, and found a little bit more consistency with my distances
and got better. I just stepped it up this year.”
Ben Flanagan, Michigan – Men’s 10,000 Meter National Champion – 28:34.53
On his mindset for the race…
“I’ve just been working closely with Sully [Coach Kevin Sullivan]. You’re prepared for
anything today. I know those NAU guys race so tough, Alabama runners, too. There are so
many strong athletes in the field. I just wanted to stay as relaxed as possible and respond
to everything.”
On getting the win…
“Going into this race, I knew I had a shot. I knew it was an outside shot. I just told myself
that I’ve never been first-team All-American. I told myself if I was in the top three to not
get too excited about it. If I’m in contention for the win, don’t settle for anything else.”
Anderson Peters, Miss State – Men’s Javelin National Champion – 82.82m (271-9)
On how he was able to get out to an early lead …
“I’ve been preparing for specifically for this meet and these types of conditions. I knew how
many warm-up throws I needed, so that’s why I was able to take the lead so early.”
On how he felt physically coming in…
“I was physically at my best, but I wasn’t able to throw as far as I wanted to. The conditions
weren’t perfect, but it was okay.”
