Eugene, Oregon — Today Florida junior Marquis Dendy won the men’s long jump at the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field with a jump of 8.00m (26’3″) to give the Gator 10 key points in the team competition.
We caught up with Dendy after the competition. Dendy, the 2013 NCAA indoor champ, was obviously pleased to be the winner, but he was particularly happy considering the fact he’d never even scored before at NCAA outdoors in either the long jump or triple jump. The inconsistent Dendy, who was only 10th at SECs outdoors this year and 16th at NCAA indoors, didn’t even make it to the final round of NCAA outdoors in the long jump last year.
Dendy dominated the competition which was held in cool 60 degree conditions. He actually had three jumps that were better than anyone else in the field. His 7.74 (25-4¾ ) opening mark would have been good enough to win as Long Beach State junior Willie Alexander went 7.73 (25-4½ ) for second, but Dendy kept jumping all the way to the end as he wanted to hit the 7.98 m needed for auto qualification to USAs.
