Two Great Quotes from Emily Lipari and Cas Loxsom That Show The Passion of Penn Relays

Thanks to a message board thread and Philly.com we’ve got two great quotes that show the passion of the Penn Relays.
The first was from Emily Lipari of Villanova. The Big East XC champ was anchoring Villanova’s 4×800 team and she got the stick just ahead of Oregon’s Laura Roesler. Roesler was the NCAA runner-up indoors at 800m and is an Olympic Trials semifinalist with a 2:01.75 pr. Lipari’s 800m pr from this year is 2:06.7.
Huge, huge advantage Roesler.
As could be expected, Roesler started to pull away around the turn.
Lipari however wasn’t done. She dug deep and somehow found another gear. Lipari passed Roesler on the homestretch and got the win with a 2:02.25 split.
Lipari told the Philadelphia Inquirer, “I know Oregon’s a great team. But I can’t stand there wasting time thinking, ‘This girl (Roesler) does this. She’s potentially better than me.’ It’s all about guts, and it’s all about heart. So whoever they’re going to put on that leg doesn’t matter. These three [teammates] definitely set the tone to our race.”
The other quote is from Penn State’s Cas Loxsom. Loxsom got the baton on the third leg in the lead with Villanova in pursuit. Villanova has a huge tradition at Penn Relays and being a Philadelphia school has a lot of local support. Loxsom blew the race wide open with a 1:46.3 split. That helped Loxsom be named collegiate male athlete of the meet (he also ran a 1:46.0 split in the DMR on Friday).
Afterwards, Loxsom said, “I heard all of those Nova fans with about 300 to go and said screw them.”
