Thanks to Midwest grocery chain Hy-Vee, the 2013 Drake Relays Presented by Hy-Vee have more than $500,000 in prize money on the line this year. In the “London Rematch” races, $50,000 is on the line – $25,000 for first, $15,000 for 2nd, and $10,000 for third. In many of the field events, $25,000 is on the line.
Day one of the pro action lived up to the hype as there were some really exciting results. We have recapped Jenny Simpson’s breath-taking win in the women’s 1500 in another piece:
Wow: Jenny Simpson Impresses With Drake Relays Record and World Lead in 1,500
The other pro events from Day 1 are recapped below.
Men’s 100 Hurdles: Jamaica’s Andrew Riley Pulls A Stunner
With all three Olympic medallists from last year here, it was an absolute stunner that Jamaica’s Andrew Riley, who went out in the first round of the Olympic Games, got the win.
After a false start by silver medallist Jason Richardson, Riley got out well and held off world record holder Aries Merritt in the race that was run into a big headwind. After the finish, a thrilled Riley kept running and slapped hands with the crowd on the turn. Olympic bronze medallist Hansle Parchment was last.
Quick Take #1: The Des Moines track has been good to Riley. Last year, he pulled off the 100/110h double at NCAAs on the very same track.

Men’s 400: Lugeulin Santos Beats Jeremy Wariner
After a good start by 2004 Olymipc champion Jeremy Wariner, 19 year old Olympic silver medallist Lugeulin Santos of the Dominican Republic absolutely ate him up on the backstretch. Santos didn’t really put too much distance on Wariner on the way home but this thing was already over at 200.
“I got out good and I think I eased off too much on the backstretch but I finished better this week than last week. I’ll be fine come USAs – low 44, high 43s,” said Wariner, who ran 45.72 last week in Waco, after the race.
For the record, Wariner hasn’t broken 44 since 2008.
Santos just missed Kirani James’ 2013 world lead of 44.72.
