I remember back for high school basketball, we had a mile time requirement every player had to run in order to make the team (different times for big men vs. guards). If I recall correctly, the prep time leading up to the time trial was about 4-6 weeks, during which we also had open gyms and morning practices. I think each week we had one running workout. Most of them were 400/100 intervals. There were maybe two sessions where the coach just had us run anywhere in pairs/groups and be back in 25 minutes. What would you say would be the best way to run a faster mile time given the time frame and limited sessions? I'm talking only group sessions - not assuming a scenario an individual runs more on their own. Initially looking back, I thought there were surely better workouts for us to run; however, after thinking about trying to balance the actual conditioning for basketball too I'm not so sure.
