I'm not even sure what half tights are. Tights are for temps under 30 degrees.

I assume that you were being facetious when you say that you don't know what half tights are, but just in case, they are essentially cycling shorts without the padding.
I agree regarding tights and temps. Being a Floridian for nearly 20 years, however, I would probably change the temperature to 35°. Even then, I really prefer a pair of loosefitting pants. My favorite is the old school hind Munich tight. They're also an important part of my warm-up on any race day below 65°.
No, not at all but now I understand. I was picturing something like capris. Half tights have always just been spandex shorts in my book. I owned a pair once but at 6'1" and 170lbs (at the time) I wasn't exactly in the peak shape to rep them. I'll take 3" shorts any day.
Saw my ortho today. You know you're a runner when you are told you have a torn meniscus and you view it as really good news.
The way he described it is that it's like having a hangnail. The nail/meniscus itself doesn't have any nerves in it, so you don't feel pain from that. But what you feel is when the nail/meniscus digs into nearby tissue that does have nerves in it. In this case, the partially torn flapping piece of my meniscus got wedge between the bones in my knee joint and is rubbing against my mcl, thus the pain where my mcl is. The knee is otherwise stable, and there are no bone issues nearby, so an mcl injury itself is pretty well ruled out.
Basically, as long as I can stand the pain I can keep doing what I do. I don't know hat I want to deal with this long term, but I'm going to ignore while I travel next week and then go back in two weeks and get a steroid injection in my knee which should help with the pain while I spend seizure weeks strengthening my quad and hamstring in an effort to get the flapper under control (not sure how that works exactly).
Worst case scenario is they go in and take out the flapper. But I'd wait until I had no other choice before doing that.
sorry to hear that, how long would it take to recover post-operation, if you did go through with it?
Sorry to hear this, Smoove. Some time off would probably heal it.
All the best to you...
Don't be sorry, this is actually good news. A damaged MCL would have required a more meaningful intervention. The way things stand now, as long as I can take the pain, I can keep running and racing. As I have said, I have been dealing with this since last summer, so I have gone almost a whole year already with it (although the pain has gotten worse lately).
Plus, surgery is really a third option, behind (1) prescription anti-inflammatories, cortisone shot and strengthening, and (2) just ignoring it. I suppose time off is a third option, but the damn thing is already torn and wedged in wherever it is, so I am not too confident that rest would do too much (or maybe I am just telling myself that since I don't want to take time off).
I don't know how long the recovery would be, but I am guessing I wouldn't run for at least a month. That is sounding like a post-Houston option at best, and, depending on the way things progress, maybe a next summer option.
Most of the time the meniscus heals on it's own, right?
It depends on where the tear is and the degree of the tear, but that is usually the case. I am guessing that won't be the case here since it has hung around for nearly a year already though.
The steroid shot should help a lot as well.. That is good news. Well the best of bad news.
I am having a decent week, not a lot of quantity but getting some turnover at times. I am thinking short hill repeats today and then taking the weekend easy and spend time w my kiddo, maybe 3 miles a day or something. Also thinking of keeping my miles in the 35-40 range in july and increasing quality a tad before jumping into a 5k first weekend in Aug.
I hope everyone has a safe and happy 4th of July..noone get drunk and pull a Jason Pierre-Paul. It should be a great weekend, aside from all the random fireworks going off allllll weekend, not my favorite.
RRR
Isn't the meniscus the one that gets like...no blood flow, so it can heal on its own but it takes forever... much longer time than Smoove wants to sit out if he's being told he's not making it worse it seems.
Smoove, weird that that's good news but glad you are not completely unpleased with the diagnosis.
Peachtree is next weekend... is anybody racing this weekend?
Smoove,
Here is my take...not that you asked for it, but anyway...
If a month would heal it (it seems reasonable it would), I would take the month off, especially if you already have a gym membership and can cross-train. I do not belong to a gym, and do not want to pay for it, and so whenever the doc has suggested cross-training, it tends to go in one ear and out the other with me.
SInce you have lots of time before Houston (Jan., right?), why not let your meniscus heal? You could even run your 4-miler, and then begin the month off from running. If I could cross-train, that is the approach I would take.
I know that not running is a hard thing for all of us here, and so I understand your perspective. I have a hard time going 48 hours without running. Ask my family--I start climbing the walls. In any case, I just want to see you heal, and get the most out of your pre-50 years. That is why I am suggesting this.
All the best...
Decent week for me so far, finally. Should be sitting on around 48 miles after today with a 25/15 back to back on tap for the weekend. Mixed in a VO2 workout and some tempo miles. Signed up for a 4 miler on July 4, just for the purpose of nailing a good tempo day.
Hope everyone has a good long holiday weekend.
Smoove - sorry to hear about the knee but sounds better than an MCL issue. I don't have any experience with meniscus injuries so no help there.
I need a last workout to do today? Any ideas? Either hills or something good for tapering. I went from 70 miles to 55. Is that enough taper or too much. The field got way more stacked.

Your taper sounds fine.
Head for the hills, my young speedy friend.
It is televised locally (the Peachtree), I wonder if we can live stream it on the stations website or not. I shall investigate.
I don't have advice on a workout but did want to say that it looks like an exciting race to be part of, that your training is looking really sharp (I couldn't hit those workouts you've been posting the past couple weeks but I felt like I could have done the ones previously), and you're gonna rock it. The hay is in the barn, as they say.
Runn3rgirl- you are ready. Be sure and eat 3-4 bean burritos (fresco style) and a six pack of natural light for optimum performance.

Haha! Carbo load! Did you find out if it's live streamed? I did my stride workout today 15-30-45-50-75-90-1:45-2:00-1:30-1:15-1:00-45-30-15 w/ equal time jog.
