Not yet mentioned, and not bud--
"Flanagan's Run" (1982) by Tom McNab. Fiction based on the Bunion Derby races across America in the 1930s.
"Miles to Go" (1982) by Mark Kram. Fiction about three runners-- Japanese, East German, and American -- and their quest to break 2:00 in the marathon.
John Walker, Steve Ovett, and Zola Budd all have outstanding biographies written about them,
Walker says he had "two or three" beers for lunch before he ran his 3:49.4 at Gothenburg.

This it true about Walker, but this was in "Kiwis can Fly" the 1975 season of Walker, Dixon and Quax. Walker's autobiography is good for people who need to improvise with injuries.
Ovett's autobiography is excellent, a must read for any serious middle distance runner.
Running With The Kenyans is good as well.
A non-running specific book that is good is Manthropology, in it the Aussie author (a Perth based exercise physiology Professor) outlines in a chapter that fossilized foot prints in the outback made by an Aboriginal man maybe ten thousand years ago was running at speeds significantly faster than Usain Bolt.
10 Seconds by Louis Edwards
Lear's book about Alan Webb was pretty interesting, too
Oops, I mistook the Purple Runner for the Front Runner, sorry!
