As I was reading the D1 Schools with the highest mileage thread, it prompted a thought regarding the best coaching ideas for high school athletes to transition to college running that first semester(year) (in terms of mileage adjustments and recovery from harder workouts).
I ran into a guy two summers ago who had run about 40 miles a week in high school (he had just graduated) and told me his college coach told him to 85 miles a week that summer going into the fall. Needless to say, he looked extremely slow and lethargic all summer, eventually got hurt, had knee surgery, and never got into a college race.
Any good thoughts on the best ways for the high schoolers to transition to college running (either in the summer or that first semester)?
