Max King? What kind of name is that? Irish?
Max King? What kind of name is that? Irish?
Let's face it, Max King is never going to be one of the top runners in the world on the track or in major road races/marathons. He might as well take his shot at events he can win, and have a good time. Not that running a 50 miler seems like much of a good time!
I am tired of the "if X trained for ultras then they would be better." The game has changed. Wardian, Skaggs, Krupicka, Jurek, these guys are studs. I mean AK was 26 seconds faster per mile. That is an entirely different race.
Running a fast 1500 is hard.
Running a fast 5k is hard.
Running a fast 10k is hard.
Running a fast Marathon is hard.
Running a fast 50 miler is hard.
Running a fast 100 miler is hard.
Unless you have run the distance, shut the hell up.
King is a very Jewish surname, not Irish.
Race results page says he ran 6 min. miles, or thereabouts, for the 50 miler.
Putting Wardian and Jurek in the same sentence isn't right!
Long distance trail... the darkside of running for some, which I have never understood.
Max King IS cool.
You're right. Wardian has competed in two U.S. Olympic Trials.
Yet, not all running events are contested at the Olympics. I don't think anyone out there today is competitive with Jurek at 100 miles and up... road or trail.

I'd respectfully disagree with that. Kyle Skaggs took 3 hours off of Scott's CR at Hardrock, and Scott hasn't been able to have success at Mont Blanc yet.
Scott is a great 100+ runner but he's not alone; there are others who as also as good. What I think is most impressive about Scott is how consistently well he performs.
So Max King takes 40th @ World XC and then comes back and wins AR50 and people are disappointed because he didn't come close to the CR??
What was it 1-2 weeks between the 2 races? He flew to Jordan and back? He did what it took to win the AR50 and beat a very talented Dave Mackey by 8minutes
I like that Max has shown some variety and wonder if we'll see him at the TNF 50 miler in SF, 10k is a lot of money to pass up for a runner that gets jack squat in support for the most part with the demise of the OTC
You guys are so funny.
King is also a very English name. Any number of nationalities which has nothing to do with anything.
AR 50 is not flat for the first half, now the second half. Check the profile on the website. The new course this year had long technical sections on the first ten miles of trail and vertical that added up significantly.
Some of you guys love to compare apples to oranges and diss each others sports and distances(esp ultras), as well as Max himself. Sad that you feel the need to do so.
Max just won the Pear Blossom 10 miler yesterday, a solo effort in 49:21 breaking his old course record. Not too shabby a week after winning a tough 50 miler.
Max is a class act, team player, and gives back to his community and running as a whole.
He has helped me, inspired the kids I coach and has helped numerous runners and teammates. Tim
Anton's Krupicka's most recent week of training:
Total: 24hr15min, ~170 miles, 21,000 vertical
Hey, how many feet of vertical do you guys get at your local track? Can you guys stand up without passing out at 14,000 feet of elevation, let alone run there?

Oh, and congrats Tony and nearing 50,000 lifetime miles.
At any rate. Good for you Max King. Why the hell would anybody run on a freaking track when they could be enjoying themselves on some beautiful single track through the mountains.
More and more people are seeing the light of day. Ultra running is a great sport with a great future.
I was there, it was my first 50 mile race. I'm new to the Ultra scene, two down and so far I love it. Cool races, cool people.
For me I just love running, more so on trails. I used to be pretty fast in HS and College, I just have no desire to go to the local track and do intervals to stay competitive at local 5k, etc. For me a 4 hour training run on a Sat morning through some great trails with a few cool runners interests me more.
Good for Max, I think he will do great at Ultras.
