Heh, the ol' keepin-the-boutique-añejo-tequila-in-the-fridge trick. Next to the Opus One cabernet, I hope?
There's better and worse grades of pee, if that's what you want to call it, and the better stuff is damn fine. I prefer Don Julio's añejo (gold, most aged) to Patron. These aged tequilas are to be sipped - from wide-mouthed glasses not shotglasses, or they will taste just as bad as the cheap crap - not mixed.
For making up a nice batch of maragaritas you still want something better than the cheap crap, but a nice blanco (white, least aged) or if you really want to spend a few more bucks, reposado (silver, aged a bit more) is what you want.
You can also enjoy those lesser grades as shots if they're decent quality. If you're into doing a little work you can make up some sangrita - OJ with a bit of grenadine, squirt of lime, pinches of salt and cayenne or other chili powder - to accompany the tequila or mezcal. Serve in a separate small glass or shotglass, either alternate sips or drink the sangrita first.
