For the modern guys # of world championships. If you can win a WC, you can win a Olympic medal. Have a couple of WC medals and not Olympic and it is bad timing.
Yeah, that's why Shaheen seems like the surest bet to have won a medal in 2004 if he had competed. If you win the WC gold the year before and after the Olympics and set a WR (still standing) only 10 days after your event you are clearly a favorite.
And don't forget in 2003 he ran 12:48 to beat Oly champ El G.
