Hope that biopsy was neg. Allen. I have had 2 myself both negs. My mate Dobbo had to have surgery on his. He has run all 44 Melbourne Marathons so scheduled his surgery a few days post Marathon.
I have a few options, and still need to weigh the pros and cons. But I'll probably start radiation therapy in a month or so. Low-dose, daily treatments for nine weeks. 100-mile round trips for a 10-minute procedure, but there's supposedly 90% cure rate.
Allen1959, good news. I had 4 weeks of Monday-Friday low dose radiation for my Lymphoma. If it is a similar treatment you will have a target session and a small pin tattoo made. The sessions are fast, but they will make you tired. Best to schedule at the end of the day, IMHO.
Recovery...Base...Speed...Race(Hayward Classic 3000 May 7th)
Week 2 of Speed 8.1 2 workouts
Tuesday poweroff treadmill 2x 1,2,3 minutes full recovery these were very hard efforts , sauna type sweating one one breathing with the last 30 seconds of the 1 minutes full tilt boogey.
Friday local gym gotta curve knockoff(Cascade) . First time on one of these , liked it so much I did my 2nd workout on it. 2x4 minutes like the last 4 minutes of a 3000 race again one one breathing. Really enjoyed this mill. Less push more leg speed compared to poweroff treadmill. IMO these will compliment each other.
Onward!
Recovery...Base...Speed...Race(Hayward Classic 3000 May 7th) Week 3 of Speed 3 workouts 8.62 outta 9.9 because nothin is a 10
Tuesday zone 3 iow slower than LT by a bit in the gym on the curve for 20 minutes at 144hr
Friday zone 3ish like Tuesday for 60 minutes but at 130hr
Saturday was spectacular except for the rest;) Man I was unfresh not stale or cranky but that 60 min friday workout left me feeling like I needed another day but my comp mind said no way roll the dice because I wanted to try MFs 3x800 R 60 seconds at 3flat followed by a 600 in 60(who was I kidding). So after an hour or so of trying to warm up plus an change of mind as I headed for the track with my dragon's because it was right after a cold rain and cold rain is not good for my hammies. Kinda interesting as I one gets closer to race day the prospect of pulling a hammy plays tug of war with the urgency to throw down a good workout. The joy of racing. Anyhow I like this state of mind not sure what to do back and forth then the light comes on like in the blues brothers. I went from highway to hell on the mill to why dont I do it on the road? A trusty well measured road course.
800 1:28/1:29 Rest 3 minutes of jogging
800 1:27/1:34 and my legs were working hard Longer Rest 5 minutes walking
800 1:27/1:28 dam felt good except my quads were a bit sore probably using different muscle patterns as I have been doing so much on the poweroff mill which is way less pounding.
So instead of finishing with a 600 hard I called it a workout but ...
Inspired!
Plan is to make it 4x800 in 12 with all the rest I need then cut the rest but the clock is ticking 6 more weeks .

Since the Siuslaw Dunes 25k was cancelled last weekend - meaning I don't have to spend a month getting over it - I might have a go at the 3000m.
Feel like I'm pretty fit, but molasses slow at the moment.
Did the "Easy Interval Method" session of 16x200m at between 1500m/3000m pace with 200m jog recovery last weekend.
Averaged 44.75 for the 200m and 62.0 for the recovery, so whole session was about 7:00 for 200m short of 4 miles. Felt like I could average 45.00 for 20, but also felt like I'd run 16 individual 200m races.
Also got in 14 x 30 sec with 1 minute steady, the day after that 6x4 minutes hardish, with 4 minute steady recovery - the 6x4 minutes with 5x4 min recovery (no recovery after the last one), came out at just on 44 min for 10k.
So not terrible shape, but probably something of a plodder right now.
Watched the 3000m at the USAT Indoor and the 65+ was won in about 11:18 in a close fight between Rich Becker and Timothy Coneheady, who I remember racing in the outdoor USATF 5000m at Lisle about 10 years ago...

Igy, Orient, Charlie, Newbie, et al: Thanks for the words. I'm still reviewing the materials I was given. Maybe the best option is having the darn thing removed. Unfortunately that would require a six-week recovery where I probably couldn't work (physical job). I can't afford to take that much time off. And there are long-term issues like incontinence.
Igy, I was told the targeted radiation had essentially no side effects. How tired? I would hope to continue training. I'm looking forward to my upcoming marathon (Memorial Day weekend).
Speaking of which, my son's low-mileage training is going well. This will be his first marathon. A solo 15-miler at sub-8 pace has him reassessing his 3:45 goal. Ha! I knew he was underestimating his potential.
My last low-mileage marathon was 5 years ago. I ran 3:26. Most of my training was at marathon pace (progression runs averaging about 8:00/mi). These days I'm barely under 9-minute pace. Ugh. That has ME reassessing my 3:30 goal!
Running pain free in knee that had meniscus surgery. Will get 10 miles this week and hopefully much more the following week.
Surgery was 22 days ago. I tried to start a supplement for my joints called movemd and I could feel even after a week that it was helping but it caused in me stomach upset.
First summer series race is not until May 15th or 16th? I’m weeks ahead of where I thought I’d be unless it suddenly gets worse.
First good healthcare experience I’ve had in awhile.

Allen1959, my experience was interesting; the process was the field of radiation decreased over time, where the healthy tissue receives initial radiation, and the unhealthy tissues is radiated the entire time. The only side effect was feeling sleepy in the hour after radiation, thus the suggestion do it at the end of the day. I did not find that radiation affected my ability to train, chemo was a different story.

On Wednesday, knee pain was, extremely difficult to push through during the second half of the run. Worst yet. Ugh. Going forward, I'll medicate BEFORE any longish efforts.
Igy, Charlie: Thanks for the info.
amkelley: I saw you mentioned the Sauerkraut 15K on another thread. I've run that many times -- almost always a hot and steamy August day! First time was 1981. Most recently, probably 2004.
amkelley: Corrections -- Sauerkraut 20K! And, upon further reflection, I first ran it in 1978 or 1979. Pretty sure I was there in '91 when you ran so well. My PR in that was 1982.
best of luck with your treatment, and to you and your son in the marathon.
ok-ish week for me in hamstring recovery:
M 45:00 + 1:15 x-t
Tu 1:20
W 1:00 + 55:00 x-t
Th 2:00 double
F 1:30 double
Sa 1:20 with track 3k at half-marathon pace (12:24) + 1:00 x-t
Su 45:00 + 1:05 x-t
Sat. = first harder running in several weeks, and it felt tight/awkward. A little more noticeable soreness waking up this am. Doesn't look likely that I can run goal race (cherry blossom 10-mile) in just two weeks, and not fit anyway. May give myself a 3-week extension and aim toward late-April 10k.
........back to the easy chair to supervise my bracket -- not looking good after Tennessee and Kentucky let me down. Have a great week,
Allen1959 sending good thoughts...I had prostate surgery (turned out to be non-cancerous0 about 10 years ago...the surgery was pretty easy and was back running 2 weeks later...hoping your procedures prove effective.
Aside from a killer time trial up the hill outside my front gate (where I improved from 13:15 to 11:31) it was a planned easy week here...including three days of jogging on Mendocino dirt...both single track on a bluff immediately above the Pacific and in an amazing redwood forest.
My intentions, depending on which MF actually shows up day to day, is to make this a hard week...fingers crossed.
I hope that you all have a week that is SO friggin' awesome that Morgan Freeman gets the call to narrate it ;}

I had HIFU done for my prostate cancer because I thought it could get me back to training faster. I paid for it out of pocket because my insurance at the time ( 2019) wouldn’t cover it. 17,500 dollars. ( money I had saved for a car)
HIFU worked but I didn’t get back any sooner than if I just would have had the prostate removed. My PSA just before the procedure was 20, and my last was 0.9.
The side effects went right down the list. I had to go to the ER twice. Once for the side effect that I still have nightmares about... retention.....Hadn’t cried like that since my wife died. Then when I was bleeding so bad that they admitted me.
But I’ve run over 4000 miles after it finally cleared up and run 7 races.
Back on the horse or at least my skis last week. Skied (downhill) for the first time in five years. Ran three days intervals, tempos, and repetitions. Swam 3,000 yards, spin biked an hours, mile rowing, one weight session, and PT exercises each day. Seem to be OK for an older fella.
Allen, I hope you can both get good treatment and get to stick with your race plans as you deal with one of those challenges that life throws at us as older masters athletes.
I had a decent week of running for my effort to make up lost ground on getting ready for the USATF 10 mile road championship in two more weeks. 41 miles for the week -
It must be at least three weeks since my last post, so here goes:
Mon 28 – 40min fartlek Tues 1 – 45min Wed 2 – no running Thurs 3 – am – 45min – pm track 5x150m Fri 4 – 50min Sat 5 – no running Sun 6 British Masters indoors M70 1500m 5:12.41 – 2nd Total 45km, 28miles

The aim was to run the equivalent distance from here to Kyiv (about 3750 laps). We completed well over 4000 laps and raised a reasonable sum to help the Ukranian people. Total 94km, 58miles
If you are well, then may all your runs be good. If unwell, may you soon be well again.

Thanks, I appreciate you sharing that. In hindsight, do you think you would you choose removal?
Meanwhile, I have yet to carefully review the literature. My wife and I will be meeting with my urologist next week, so I need to get all my questions and concerns assembled by then.

Less than 10 weeks now to my marathon. Comparing my fitness to 2016, I'm slower, but have been logging more miles. In 2016, I didn't decide to run the marathon until only EIGHT weeks before the race. At that point, I added long runs and substantially increased my mileage.
