It’s not a core part of the training. I think the idea is that splitting the 25’-30’ of work into 3-5 intervals with short rest will allow each rep to stay in a beneficial zone. If you go 30’ continuous by the end of the tempo everything is elevated and the last 5 minutes is different than the first 5. Nothing against those tempos especially in marathon training, but doesn’t feel like the objective of the Norwegian method.
Absolutely spot on. The whole point of what has been paid out and done by sirpoc and what the rest have adopted is that this is repeatable. Good luck doing 30-35 mins straight tempo to anyone doing this, at even the slowest of these paces three times a week. You'll be ruined quite quickly.
The whole point of this, is to be close to what the body can handle, but never over it. It's a long grind. Anyone who is in the Strava group can see sirpoc has gotten inspirationally better, but it is an absolute grind. It doesn't look fun, it's not glamorous and it isn't appealing. I would think the mental aspect is as important in this as well as the confidence to stick to it.
Unless we are talking 1500 and below or the marathon, in my opinion anyway, trying to chop and change bits of this is probably only going to make it worse. It's not perfect, but having coached myself on and off since the 80s it's as close if not the absolute best plan probably 90% of runners could or should follow, with the only difference being the aforementioned 1500 and down and marathon and up runners . If you are going to tweak, maybe something like strides IF you wanted to here and there. But a lot of thought seems to have gone into why and how you workout each week, so one should be hestintant or changing anything too much at this point.
