I remember when the first "athlete cardiac death" stories came out and the "deaths" they were cataloguing included living athletes and athletes who had died years ago. Just a scam.
I have yet to see a verified list of actual cardiac deaths as well as true incidence from prior years.
For instance the "good sciencing" page references a study for prior cardiac death rates in younger athletes (30 / year) but that study's list is drawn from:
A systematic review of the literature identified causes of SCD, sex, age, underlying cardiac disease and the type of sport and PPSP in use. Methods necessary to detect pre-existing cardiac abnormalities are discussed to formulate a PPSP for the Medical Commission of the IOC.
"Literature confirmed" usually means published in peer reviewed journals, surely a much much smaller subset than any general survey.
Secondly the site calls this study a "NIH Document" simply because it is indexed on PubMed... it's acutually a article from a European Cardiac Journal by Swiss authors. Such attribution mistakes really really makes me question the thoroughness of their work.

I think you misunderstand my point.
COVID caused athlete deaths (the obvious explanation as COVID is proven to cause heart issues well in excess the rate of the vaccine) should trend with the cumulative number of infected.

You don’t get a COVID heart attack 3 weeks after recovering. You have an elevated risk for months or years afterwards. We wouldn’t expect deaths to rise for many months after the epidemic started and then rise with cumulative COVID infections as they added to the pool of vulnerable people.

The spike in that chart correspond perfectly to what you would see after the massive winter 2020 and Delta waves finally manifested themselves.

But on a higher level, I simply don’t believe this data. Every other attempt to catalog athlete deaths recently by laypeople has been filled with incorrect data and poor cataloging efforts. Then, these numbers are compared to historical published studies with very rigorous standard for inclusion. Of course we are going to see more incidents if we scour the globe for news stories and then compare to academic data from a smaller subset with more rigorous standards for inclusion.

Study also doesn’t control for the fact that more people were competing in sports in 2021 vs 2022. A lot more. And that deaths may be reported more due to heightened scrutiny on the vaccine. Or that it’s easier to find globaL news articles than it was in 2006.

This a nothing but a correlative dataset that, at best, suggests the need for more rigorous studies. Good thing we have huge clinical trials showing minimal risk of heart problems! Someone already did the studies you want!
