As I've said many times before, I go out and run in the mornings. I also take a walk with my family every evening.

My friend is not dead. We are praying for his recovery but are very worried.

Oh yeah I forgot about going running and for walks, and the Thursdays at the bar, oh, and Poker night Fridays, some trips to Target and Home Depot. And time we went to the beach....and we go to the pool too. You're no different than anyone else.

I want you to look around at the people at your church on Sunday and realize that three-quarters of them (and most likely the preacher) are Trumpers and "responsible" for your friend being on a ventilator. Then I want you to look in the mirror and understand that you are just as "responsible" as them.

255 dead and 6755 new cases for Texas. Still dealing with the quandary of a positivity rate that is up to 24% for the state. Demand for testing has dropped off and the number of tests done has dropped off significantly. So, who knows whether the trend is downward or things have plateaued and people are just having pandemic fatigue. Free testing statewide would make a big difference. I fear that people are staying away from testing because of the cost.

Hospitalizations in Houston ticked up slightly the past two days, ending a fairly steady decline from a peak in mid July. The number of hospital and ICU COVID patients is still about three times more than it was in May. Looking back, hospitalizations were really the canary in the coal mine that signaled the big outbreak in July. Positive test trends were too erratic in June to see a clear trend.

Governor is resisting opening bars. And when bars open, there will be significant restrictions. I guess we can thank the Baptists for something.

I've already told you I'm not that different. Lots of people are like me, sheltering as much as possible. I've never understood why you and GA Gal are so obsessed with my sheltering habits.

I truly don't know the political leanings of our church members but I can tell you that I've never seen a Trump sticker or confederate flag on any of the cars in the parking lot. And I'm about 99% certain that the pastor didn't vote for Trump. We are not that kind of church.

If I am responsible then it is only because I didn't work harder to elect Stacy Abrams.

He's not a close friend, no. Before covid, I would see him at least once a week and I've known him for many years.

I don't see how that matters. I'm worried about him and I'm angry because this didn't have to happen. I'm also angry that my brother still has breathing problems from his own bout with covid. It is the fault of Trump and Kemp and the people who support their covid policies.

Going in the wrong direction in many ways.

World: Stairstepping every day to new cyclical highs

US: Starting a new upcycle? 7 day average of deaths has risen 5 straight days. But still not as high as August 8.

There was talk of some data quality problems in the post August 8 week ..maybe the drop in deaths did not actually happen.

BZ actually may be improving in a small way. deaths falling back below 1000 per day for one of the first times since June.

The opposite for India - that country has been inching worse almost every day and is now above 1000 deaths per day.

In the four problem states TX FL CA AZ...same trend as the US as a whole. They hit a peak Aug 4, dropped a bit...and have been getting worse for 5 straight days. Bad data last week?

None of the problem states is at new highs for deaths so that's good.

I'll probably add GA to the problem state list. Skyrocketing deaths there: 75 per day now.

So things are getting worse in most places, after a respite of a few days.

Predictably, the deaths reported per day are increasing. Georgia had a significant (+500%) increase in the 7-day average for cases (date of onset) from Jun01 to the peak on Jul11. Given the "27 day average from infection to death" posited by several posters on this thread, what we are seeing in the deaths reported per day is the result of the status of the virus at least 4 weeks prior. In addition, on average, half the deaths reported per day are attributed to the previous week and a quarter attributed to more than two weeks prior (sometimes as much as 35-40%). Often, the deaths reported per day represent the status of the state five to six weeks ago due to the time it takes infected to die and reporting delays.

Since Jul11, cases by date of symptom onset have decreased 43% (from Jul11 to Jul31) and the short term trend seems to indicate a continued decrease. Most metro Atlanta counties have seen ~50% decreases in that time frame. Not every area is in the same situation - other counties like Columbia/Richmond hit their peak in late July and will likely see peaks in deaths in late August.

Georgia, theoretically, hit its peak in deaths around Aug07 (per the "27 days to die"). Because of the delays in reporting, we are still seeing the increases in deaths reported per day. Currently, at the 14-day confidence window (Jul31), Georgia is at about 45 deaths/day for the 7-day average (current peak is Jul27 - 48). Due to the delay in reporting, the Jul31 deaths will likely rise into the 50s over time. I'd estimate that the peak for GA will be into the 60s. Hopefully, lower.

I understand that for comparison purposes between states, giving the deaths reported daily is the easiest method since some sites aggregate the data for all states into one table. However, it is important to note that it gives a poor indication of what the current or recent status of the pandemic is in an area. It could actually be getting better or much worse.

The solutions to auto deaths are more dependent on engineering and regulation than on science.

And we have implemented many of these solutions such as crash testing, seat belts, and air bags.

Future solutions include driverless cars and communication between vehicles, which help to avoid crashes altogether. Both the engineering and regulatory efforts are ongoing.
