Testing makes no difference at all unless you can get your results within 48 hours. Even then, it only makes a difference if you test positive.
Don't get tested unless you are pretty sure you are infected.
The only tool we have today for stopping covid is the lockdown. Without lockdowns, nothing else will work.
Why are you still pushing this BS lie. Lock downs are not the only tool we have and they have not shown to even be an effective tool on their own. You have an agenda and are a fat liar and that is it. Show some evidence the lock downs work. You still have not, just links to things that say "lock down" and you call it good, you declare yourself correct. There is to date no direct evidence that lock down are effective or effective enough to be worth the social and health consequences associated with them. There are many other more proven avenues to address this pandemic that you have declared ineffective. You are just a fat liar pushing propaganda; don't listen to this crap people.
I was out in Portland Maine the other day. Everybody was abiding by the distancing and mask pollcies... and lots of people were out shopping and buying coffee and stuff.
Just seems like the economy might be able to chug along fine if everybody follows the rules.
Maybe winter will change that though.

Why are you still saying this crap when I proved conclusively that you are wrong?
Lockdowns obviously have been successful all over the world. Lockdowns have been studied extensively as I posted many, many scientific studies about it. Lockdowns are the base of the only strategy proven to work against this virus.
Until we have new technology like a vaccine, at-home testing, or improved theraputics, the best way to save lives is to have lockdowns in the places where the virus is out of control.
I totally agree. If people do the basic things, I really think local economies will survive and the virus will more quickly work its way out of existence. Everywhere that has been hit hard is not seeing a return and people are out and about doing their business and going along with basic precautions.
The public should not fall for the lock down lie again. Honestly, locking things down likely just prolonged all of this hardship as well as creating a social, financial, and public health disaster in the process.

I do think a place like NYC is definitely going to see a rise in the fall.
Let's say work goes back to normal, everybody is commuting in on the Metro North, PATH, MTA etc. Perfect breeding ground to get the rest infected.
Any place that is not dependent on public transport, which is like 90% of the US, can totally avoid this. Distancing from strangers, masks, hand sanitizer, and distanced seating.
So I feel like this winter will be rough but also doable. NYC is a complete bust though. I lived there and am not renewing my lease for the fall/winter at least. No point to be there. And I know a ton of people that are doing the same... retail and real estate there is going to get rekt.
So are you saying there will soon be an NYC buyers market?

What you are saying is definitely possible; fingers crossed NYC is in the clear of this, but it is just a waiting game. I am hoping that the fact that it is spreading now everywhere is a good indication that it is not so much as seasonal as influenza; hopefully a one and done like SARS01, but only time will tell.

This is the biggest problem though. Not everyone buys into social distancing or masks. This is one small example but look at the % of people who wear masks in the grocery store. It varies wildly from state to state. Also look at the basic denial of the virus. If you don't think the virus is serious, you aren't going to socially distance yourself.
I agree that the economy can be okay, but I would also estimate that 1/3 of people are still actively avoiding restaurants, movie theaters, etc. That is a huge chunk of demand that has gone away.

Lockdowns are definitely not the only tool. Just one. They didn’t work here because people didn’t lockdown and they were not enforced. A large number of experts say that it can be beaten by mask wearing by a large portion of the population and enforced social distancing. Lockdowns are not needed. We have enough tools to beat this without lockdowns if people are responsible and there is enforcement in some tools.

In Texas, we have had a state wide mask requirement for over a month. Bars have been closed and restaurants have been limited to 50% capacity for the same time period. Hospitalizations are down from a peak of over 10,000 state wide to about 7,200. But the positive rate in Texas is up to 24% and the seven day moving average for new cases is still above 7,000 a day. Fatalities are bad with a seven day average holding above 200 a day (of course, this is a lagging statistic that reflects infections that occurred up to a month ago).
Had Texas gone into a hard and strict lockdown at the beginning of July instead of the half measures of mask wearing and social distancing, we would have been able to crush the curve and be at a point now where schools could reopen safely with adequate testing and businesses could slowly reopen with social distancing and mask measures. That is because lockdowns work. Every time they go into effect, they crush the curve and leave countries with a manageable level of infections. And, perhaps most importantly, having a low level of infections sets up for a good chance to control the inevitable uptick in infections when the weather turns colder this fall. At least in Texas, we have until November to worry about getting real cold fronts. But if we are still having 7-9k new cases and 7k+ in the hospital this fall, things could really get ugly in a way not seen in any other state.

"if people are responsible" masks and distancing could work in theory.
Practically, it doesn't work in America and that has already been proven.
Too many Americans won't abide by mask-wearing and social distancing guidelines.
So we are left with the one strategy that has worked all over the world.
1) Lock it down.
2) Stop the spread.
3) Test and trace.
Politically, that's very hard to do. Scientifically, it's the only thing proven to work.

Lockdowns didn’t work before. There’s no reason to think they’ll work a second time.

Lockdowns worked beautifully before. Cases went down dramatically. The problem was that governors and the president ignored CDC guidelines and opened up too soon. That lead to the death, suffering, and desolation we have now. It lead to the disaster here that we no longer see in nations that did lockdowns right.
Again, the problem was political and not scientific.

You believe they wouldn't work a second time because of politics?
I agree. What should be done and what will be done are two very different things.
Interesting data point.
Two prominent Atlantans, Dr. Sanjay Gupta and Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms both have school age children. Both send their kids to private schools that allow parents to send them in person or start the year online.
Both have chosen the online option.
To all those who doubt the necessity or efficacy of social distancing, masks, lockdowns, etc. - One question: Why do you think that the US is still experiencing so many cases and so much death while our closest cousins (Europe, Canada, Australia) are not?

Re: NYC discussion
I think you guys are overestimating how many people will be going back to in-person work. At least anecdotally, none of my friends/their friends are being asked to go back this year. Seems like just a small % of people who need to be there will be ~ do not anticipate extremely crowded trains or offices. The bigger concern might be schools to me. I do not see a mass return to work, or people stopping wearing masks/distancing as they are very ingrained at this point. Once the weather turns crappy, indoor spread will be of great concern, though.
