If Lagat breaks Scott's American record should it be marked with an asterisk?

Given Lagat's spotty record, integrity wise, it's not too fanciful to conclude he's merely a self aggrandizing mercenary. USTAF, should do what the international folks are doing and make him wait--say three years--before he can compete in sanctioned events.

I don't know much about it; is that a normal rule, to make an athlete wait 3 years? Other waiting periods, etc? Thanks.

by the way, I'm a 1500m runner. At least I was, back in college, and when I ran with Nike for a few years afterward. Oh, and I qualified last year for the Ibero-American Championships in Seville, Spain, in the 1500m. You might have heard of it, but I'd bet most english-speaking americans haven't. It's like the Commonwealth Games, only in Spanish.

Also by-the-way, I have dual citizenship- Panama and US (Just like John McCain). The way it works: being part Panamanian, my mother (my Panama side) registered me in Panama when I was a child. There is NOTHING I can do to stop being Panamanian. I could swear before the Panama Supreme Court (Yes, Panama has a Supreme Court) that I'm American, and Panama would say That's nice, you're still Panamanian. Since I can't do anything about it (and I don't want to do anything about it, anyway, because I love both of my countries) I enjoy all the benefits of dual citizenship.

Making a dual-citizen decide- forcing them to repudiate one country and forsake it forever, in favor of another country- would be, to me, like forcing me to decide which one of my parents I should hate. Hate, I say, because to choose one over the other would be one of the most terrible decisions I would have to make. The only thing worse would be a "Sophie's Choice," having to choose one of my children over the other one.

For those who say Lagat's not legit because he's a naturalized citizen- a bet a lot of you are also for legal adoption. The emotional attachments of adopted children and parents are sometimes stronger than natural relationships (not to say adoption is un-natural).

Instead of railing on Lagat for becoming American, how about if you take it as a compliment. Despite your shortcomings, and despite the problems Americans face all over the world, he's a world-class athlete who looked at us and said he wanted to be one of us. He's really, if you think about it, doing a very Christian thing, and loving his enemy.

Sorry, No Offense. I didn't mean to rail on you. I pretty much agree with you. I meant to try to enlighten some of the jingoists, hyporcrits, and bigots.

You lost something apparently. Anyway, no one can argue against Lagat's citizenship and records unless they address the following:

1. Would anyone care if he did NOT break any AR's?

2. You can go to other countries, gain citizenship and break their records.

3. The only reason anyone is concerned is because Lagat is better than our elites and feel threatened. If it's such a big deal then get faster and beat him then.

4. Why do you hate it that someone WANTS to come here and live with us, our country, and represent us?

I know he didn't grow up eating McDonalds, live in a gated community and get everything he wanted when he was little otherwise he'd throw a fit, or accuse other top athletes of doping or EPO, but he lived here 10 years and he gained citizenship just like all of your ancestors did and just like the law says. I just don't get the argument against. I welcome him with open arms and I hope he sets some records lower.

Haha, even though you were joking (and admittedly that's about all you can really do on a thread such as this) those make more sense than the people arguing for real against Lagat.
