Really? If Karjakin had played 39. Qb3 before Bxf7+, could Carlsen have survived? I don't know, but the engines and the commentators seemed somewhat doubtful at the time. I assume that Carlsen will actually participate in the post-game press conference today, so perhaps we'll get his view, although I suspect that he's going to downplay his apparent unease while waiting for Karjakin's thirty-ninth move.
Engines don't understand that Black draws these endgames (perhaps not easily, but not needing Giri/Karjakin skills either) even though White is 2 pawns up, as the doubled f-pawns are too clunky. The clearest line, if you believe it to be drawn which indeed seems the case is 39. Qb3 Nf5 40. Bxf7+ Qxf7!? (Carlsen gave some Kg7 lines, and he well draw those too, but it's very much messier), 41. Qxf7+ Kxf7 42. Rxh7+ Ke6 43. Rxc7 Nh4+ (not Nxd4 yet, as g6 is too weak) 44. Kg3 Nf5+ 45. Kf4 Nxd4, and White's progress does not seem to come. Black also looks to have a wide margin of error in the shuffling-around phase.
