I have a kid who has run 4:30 as freshly minted 13 y/o, was running 4:35 as 12 y/o. I don't know about sub 16 5ks as a 13 y/o but he has high ceiling.

Funny how relative age is. Some of it is where you are and what social recreational, and probably athletic things youre involved in. I turned 17 in my senior year. Joined the Navy in January and had to wait until graduation (by special arrangemen) to go to boot camp. The thing is that I never thought about beingthat young basic t. and nobody ever mentioned it. It didnt exist then or the followin years at sea or on land. Im not saying that change, growth and dev. Werent happening, Im saying that it just wasnt very important to the life and activities: when youre doing the job and keeping up nobody minds or cares much the number of years youve been alive.

He has completed the transition from 8th-grade phenom to nothing special as a Junior.

Even last year he was losing to a New Yorker in the grade below him

He did run a 9:17 this year though

The top 4 runners on this list are from South Dakota. The Boy from Estelline Cooper no longer runs cross-country. My Boy Kyler is in the same grade as Cooper in Estelline. However Cooper was 13 months older than Kyler but they were in the same grade (8th Grade). Move to freshman year and my boy after being dominated by Cooper since the 7th grade started beating him in many of their freshman meets even though he should have been an eighth grader due to his age. Let's fast forward to this track season and my boy who trained very hard decided he no longer wanted to run either. My boy set a PR of 17:08 as a 14 year old Freshman, but should be an 8th grader. But how old is he? 13? 14? 15? 16?

14 this year? Born 2011?

Haven’t we learned our lesson? These fast middle schoolers don’t end up doing anything. Training too hard too young.
