For someone to run a sub 2 hour marathon, they would need to be able to break 12:30 for 5000 and be better at the marathon than they were at 5000. Given that, more than likely, nobody has broken 12:50 even, without - cough cough - 'assistance', I think that a sub 2 is very unlikely to be run by humans as we understand them and without lots of drugs. Soon, though, genetic engineering will create runners capable of running well under 2 hours. They'll have hooves and a tail, but....

Okay, so like one where someone has run faster than the course record at Boston? Or I guess that could be an outlier - maybe where someone has run faster than the second fastest time at Boston?
I think the trick is fuel management. I am surprised that there has not been some sort of glycogen PED created. I don't know the science. I am not talking about an infinite amount of energy. Just an enhancer that speeds up glycogen creation during marathon feeding. Could this be possible?
No one thought the NASDAQ would set another record from the March 2000 record in our lifetime but it did.
I cannot help but wonder....did my posts help create the Nike Sub 2 project?

I agree that the guys running in that 2:04-ish range are themselves freaks. But so is anybody running a 9.8x for the 100m. At some point, somebody will just be even more freaksihly good than Geb or any of the current best, and with the right conditions, that person can do it.
You raise some good points, but if this was women's marathoning, I wouldn't have written the piece as there seem to be more outliers. Look at someone like Semenya or Griner. OF course, Paual with two children doesn't really fall into that category but I would feel much less confident arguing against if we were talking about women's marathoning as I know humans can go way faster. Here, I'm not sure humans can do it.
