nobody is saying to totally eliminate any warmup or stretching before a race or workout; but over the past 30 years, starting in the 70's, it has been way overdone, becoming a 'workout in itself'...and THAT is NOT necessary.

What do you think about yoga then?
To Thomas,
In the last six-seven weeks I'm finishing my seven weeks on July 21,this friday-all these weeks I have been sleeping like a baby.Last monday,Tuesday, wednesday. On monday I sleep three times,Tuesday two times and Wednesday one time.Working on loosing weights you sleep alot. The body gets tired easily, you can't do anything else.If try to do something else at this stage will be hard to do.
I only go to the store to buy something and post office to mail-out autographs and received the mail.
Perhaps Kinkos to print-out color photos for autographs and to central new mexico community college to print-out letsrun.com threads.
Most of the day I'm focusing on one master record. The management of this body is enough to occapy me.It is a full-time job, perhaps twenty-four jobs.I can't think or even have energy to think something else. I'm full-time baby sitting me.I let my body to come-down this far. Now I have to pick it-up.It takes amount of power from me.
How is that sound!Until I weigh 145lbs then I will have extra-times on my hands. From 197.9-145lbs still a long way to think about extra-time.The body works so hard. The feeling burnings fires makes the body tired.

To on the other hand
(Quotes)"Any other brilliant ideas from nature?"
Its fair and understandable to think this way.Train for 3-4 months with-out making and disturbing muscles when their positioning themselves and structuring into the right places for running.Spent more time runniiiiiiiiiiiiiii!!!iiing not stretchiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing!
Do you have motivation for running?
What is your motivation for running?
Henry
You plan to lose FIFTY more pounds, Henry?
WOW!
Anyone who can find 50 pounds can also lose 50 pounds.
Henry, are you sure you are not stretching things a bit when you said you walked 40 miles when you were 6? You know how when you are young distances seem a lot longer then they really are? 40 miles at six???

++++Did you ever see a lion stretch before it kills lunch?++++
Those who use this argument have never spent a lot of time observing animals. Wild animals stretch alot. Lions do more stretching than running. The zebras stretch as well.
That's just nonsense. Cute observations that your dog stretches as you are about to go running or your cat stretches during a cat nape isn't stretching in the sense of this discussion. Of the hundreds of times your dog did'nt stretch before a run did you take notice? Why? - because it's not a cute observation. Heck, we humans stretch and yawn in our sleep too- just like cats. Does that mean we're stretching specifically for extreme physical exertion during our sleep? I'd bet that Henry yawns and puts his arms stretched out above his head while he arches his back - is that "stretching?" Only in the most literal sense, son.
In that natural world the facts are that animals (lions and tigers and bears, oh my) do not engage in anthropomorphic stretching rituals before it kills, or avoids being, lunch. In fact, their preparation is just the opposite, they are alert, focused and their musculature is in a state of high tension - which is exactly the way the human animal needs to be before competition. When a baby gazelle wanders too close to the tall grass, the lioness doesn't waste a moment stretching.
Full disclosure: I'm not against stretching. I do think that occasional stretching can be helpful somewhat. As far daily ritual stretching goes - the time would be much better spent running.
Helo Henry Rono.
Thank you for writing
I am new on the internet, I was wondering have you written any place how you trained when you ran world records in the 70s and 80s ?.
I very much want to learn about how you trained then.
Is it the same type of training that you do today when you go after age 55 world record?.
Did you jog easy for many monts 2-3 times aday and then did hard intervals only before the competition?
Also I wonder how fast could you run in 200 or 400m at your best and do you think it is important to have good speed if you will become fast in 5000m and 10000m?
I hope you have time to answer me
Thank you.
To Bjorn.

Henry Rono training for mile record PART I
I'm trying to do that when times comes. In ditances wise yes but not yet in speed work.I do a have when it comes to speed work.
Now going back to "STRETCHING MUSCLES"
Why everybody got up with this problem of strerching?
Did I get your attention? please! Ask yourself if did?
In most of the thread in the last few days it has been about stretching issue. Is this has been your problem? I bet it is.
No wonder we have issues about running in North America. No one wants to run now-days as of 1960s-70s One ask me if stretched when I used to walk 40 miles at the age of 6 year-old.Perhaps was a kid and you were how do you think about stretching.
This is very interesting.Keep it up and stop asking other importants question such as motivations which is suppose to be the issue in North America running.
Why talk about streching and yet you have not make a decision about running? Are you one of this runners wants to know about everything running before they decide to run? Is it hurts?,They ask. "What is it feels like?"
You are missing the good sides of the questions and getting on the wrong questions again no wonder north America can keep up with the rest of the world in running.I have been trying to lead you to the right questions since the begining of this threads but you tie me around with the wrong questions.
Make a list of the importants in running.I'm heading out-post-office

yoga is fine, for what it is...."the stretch alot, vs: minimal stretching" before a race or workout, is narrowly focused on its effect on the race; positive or negative; not as a discipline unto itself, which is what alot of runners have done since the 70's.
Henry,
What you wrote is right on for me.
Heart is what motivates me.
My body was made to move and running is peaceful to me( after the workout)
Malmo: Point well taken.
For me , time to be quiet and run.
To Van,
Yes Van- "For me , time to be quiet and run."
Point-Taken Van!
The quietness allows you to listen to your muscles actually your entire running system. The way it moves, when you are running spare an ear to hear to your feelings.
My muscles are still feeling burning fires at the grandma's pace.Still burning in the oven and no time for stretches. How is that sound Van?!!!
This is my formula, when I used to coach High School. The high school kids were going wild and make noises I had to stop the noises, they ran well and the head coach thanked me for catching their attention.

To mr. common sense,
The 47 days of training 120 minutes total
40mwr+60mhc+20wdr=120 minutes.I thought of stretching today after all minutes of runs, but I didn't have energy to do it and I'm not used to it.
One told me the other if I had known how to stretch I could have ran 10k in 26:22 mintes a long time ago. Is that right! All my world records times could have been todays generations times.
I had one run today. No intervals yet, I'm still pushing one more day at the time.....until I'm fully recovered.
Henry
Henry,
Being still helps me during the day to store energy for running. When i run around like chicken with no head im tired before i even run.
Today i am paying attention to many small things about the body and i am learning that the smalllest voice is the most important.
To Van,
Van, quotes "When i run around like chicken with no head im tired before i even run."
Save energy for running Van as I do now-days.
I notice if I missuses my energy as running around like a chicken with the head cut off, I will have no head to run.I keep everything in me and run it off on training. When I run it off,I exchange with good energy that keeps me to be productive.I'm not stress-out in little things sitting in my head that it makes me run around with no head.
What do you think of that?
Henry
Hi Henry,
First of all Henry, it is an honor and privilege to correspond with the greatest runner of all time in my book. I used to live in Fountain Valley, California and remember you passing me on a training run in Miles Square park back in 1991. You were training to break the 40 year old masters record back then.
I am also a 200 pound middle age runner trying to get back into 150 pound shape after years of semi-retirement from running. At 48 years of age, my body can't take the 75-80 mile weeks of pounding anymore and weight is difficult to lose just by running. I finally found that at my age, I have to diet sensibly and run sensibly at the same time to lose weight.
My question to you is… What is your current dietary habits? Are you on any special diet plan to help you get to your target weight of 145 lbs?
I wish you good luck in your challenge to achieve all of your goals Henry.
DLH
Not stretching is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Sure you don't want to stretch cold muscles, but not stretching at all is just stupid. EVERY ELITE RUNNER TODAY STRETCHES. Y? Because by stretching out one's muscles it allows the elasticity of each muscle to expand and therefore increase one's stride with little effort. The reason world records have been broken since your time, is because of stretching and other plyometric exercises. Now it is not on this alone, but it is a part of every World Record holders routine today.

I was in Fountain Valley in 1992 not 1991. You are right I was trying to brake master record in 5k I ended up running 14:14 or something like that as the time was push to 13:50s.I was having hard time loosing weighs.
You are right loosing weights is not easy, but putting distances, long runs is not hard. It is very slow though and that is why I use minutes to cover the distances.I also make comments about the feelings burning fires in every corner of the body. This approach is unique unlike the old-timers approach.I do update my daily training.
"What is your current dietary habits? Are you on any special diet plan to help you get to your target weight of 145 lbs?"DLH.
My dietary at this point is veges not meat.I'm going back to my childhood where I never saw the meat.I feed my body with no meat.I just started drinking NONIs. I'm spentting the all money on liquid dietary supplement basically the same amount of money as I used when I was drinking alcohol.I make sure my daily training is updated.
I'm stable to go through this training unlike the time, when I was in Fountain Valley. This is the only focus is master mile record.
I just ignore the weighs and go through the body soreness of feeling burning fires, until I meet my right running weights somewhere between now and in December,2006.
What do you think of that?
