Blair Bartlett (incoming Jr) beat Blade and Rodriguez at the NON 3k. She also beat Ritzenhein at Penn relays. But she plays tennis in the fall, so no XC results yet. Will be interesting to see if she switches to XC this year.

I know someone who is friends with someone on her team, and they told me that Blair Barlett is going to run xc this fall for the first time. With Leachman still apparently sidelined, Barlett has a good shot to win NXN.

Has anyone ever won NXN individually in their first year of XC? She could be the first one

Great decision from her, although XC is not Track. Englehardt and Blade finished well behind Leachman and Rodriguez at NXN last year. We shall see who emerges in 2025... same thing can be said about XC to Track as Garces and Ferrebee were not as impactful on the track compared to NXN results.
And yes, many Freshman have qualified to NXN in their first year of XC.

I was wondering if there were every any national champions after never having done XC before
For NXN, I don't think anyone has ever won their first year of xc.
For Foot Locker, at least one girl has won as a freshman, Jordan Hasay, although it wasn't Hasay's first time ever running xc, since she ran some xc races while she was in junior high.
So yes, if Barlett wins she might be the first to ever do that in her first year of xc.
As a comparison, Angelina Perez had the previous New Jersey 3k record, and Bartlett broke that record by 5 seconds. And Perez only lost Foot Locker by 4 seconds. So Barlett should definitely be in the mix for the win at NXN.
Not sure why so many downvotes on that. I don’t think she has done anything this year that will make the national title out of her reach.
What are you talking about? Ritzenhein is not the top returner from last year's NXN. Ritzenhein also ran considerably slower this year in track than she did last year, both indoors and outdoors. Ritzenhein got beat by 7 seconds at Penn Relays in the 3k and she finished only 6th at Brooks PR. She hasn't done anything her junior year that would make her the favorite to win NXN this fall. Is there a slight possibility that she'll win? Yes, but the odds are not in her favor.

Grace ping came in 14th at NXN in 2015 as a 7th grader, its insane to even type. Definitely the best first season of XC by anyone ever.
Interestingly enough, she didn't pan out to be a super dominate force. At that time the conversations were about who was better: Tuohy or Lane, east coast VS west coast. A race that never happened but probably would have been the best/biggest race in girls HS xc history.
Also a fun fact, the same year Ping came in 14th on the girls side (2015), the boys winner was a guy named Casey Clinger. He just came in 6th this year at the NCAA championships. 10 years later, he's still in college running for BYU. Lmao

I think Sydney Mascarelli fits the bill.. went from Varsity Basketball to Foot Locker Champion in a year.
This is a great example of how I hate that there is multiple national championships.
Mascarelli had an insane run in '18 100% no doubt. But you'll never convince me that she would have beat Tuohy or Chmeil that year. Tuohy was finishing top 10 in huge invitational merges INCLUDING THE BOYS. Literally finishing with times next to guys who were 9:20 2 milers. Letsrun loves to sh1t on her pro career, but in HS there's no shot anyone actually beats her in xc.
Here's a fun comparison: In 2022 Tuohy's younger brother won the section 1 state qualifier meet at Bowdon in a time of 16:38. (Section 1 NY is no slouch - Tuohy, Mary Cain, Rai Benjamin, Eric Holt, - literally Olympic gold medalists are from there) 2018 Katelyn ran 16:45 on that course. What she did was completely unreal.

Grace Ping and Casey Clinger ran out of NCAA track eligibility in the same year(this year)... He won NXN when she was in 7th grade.

Technically Masciarelli fits the bill, as she won Foot Locker XC in her first year as a runner on her school team.
On the other hand, she started club running in 3rd grade, and was MA middle school girls xc champ as 7th and 8th grade, so not like she had no running background.
She did also play varsity soccer, and continued with basketball right through senior year. She was a very good high school guard, could have played on bad P4 teams, but not at top 25 level.
Note: basketball does not conflict with xc, xc is a fall sport, and hoops is winter.
I think this is a wait and see situation. They have 2 girls from last year's team returning, but they have a few girls that are faster than their 6 and 7 girls. Plus last year one of the freshman that ran 18 flat that didn't go to nationals. So, I really think that is will need time.
Additionally, the year before last they weren't even in the conversation and got 3rd. So, that's something to consider.
Well in 2023, the three scoring seniors that graduated were replaced by the transfers that came in

Also, Casey Clinger (2017 American Fork Alum) and Creed Thompson (2021 Skyridge alum) both ran out of BYU eligibility at the same time. Both graduated HS 4 years and ran out of eligibility at the same time from the same team. Crazy
Chap has a ton of problems, bad coaching, false promises, and a lot of discord on the team. Wouldn’t be surprised if there is an exit or firing in the near future of the coaching staff.
Really? You know something? I think the kids seem pretty happy there. They are successful too.
