They are well coached, even if they may or like him. The US players generally didn’t like Ellis and Gustavsson. So when the woke GM selected Andonovski, who a lot of the players liked. Meanwhile, 15 players walked out on Vilda trying to get him fired because his practices were too hard and because of who he selected for the team. Spain won the World Cup, Australia reached its first semifinal and the U.S. got knocked out at the start of the knock out rounds. Spain plays the game beautifully. They pass well, they move well and they defend well. A team playing together usually beats a team with a couple better athletes trying to play one v one.
What you say is true but you almost lost me from reading your entire post with your use of the trite and tired “woke.” It’s the most misused word in the English vocabulary because “this is woke, that is woke, anything anyone doesn’t like is woke.” The word has now lost its meaning.
As the furor over that infamously unwanted kiss circles around Spain’s Football Federation chief, Luis Rubiales, some may be surprised to learn that the initial complaint wasn’t filed by the woman he kissed, but a man watchin...
I just read about this. WTF! He didn't kiss anyone. He coached his team to winning the World Cup then gets fired for something his boss did. Makes no sense.
Fifteen players sent emails to the Spanish soccer federation on Thursday saying that the national team's situation had affected their "emotional state" and "health." The federation, though, has come out swinging in response.
This just confirms what I've believed all along, womens soccer is a joke that just happens to be flavour of the month currently. It'll soon be back to obscurity soon and the headlines will be back to the real stuff.
Everybody has been talking about the kiss. It was hardly standalone. That guy was overly aggressive throughout the ceremony. I was shocked at what I was seeing because it was so atypical. Normally I barely pay attention as each player walks up on the platform. This time I watched carefully throughout because of his smiley grabby overly sexual manner with every player. It seemed like just a matter of time before he went over the top.
And I was amazed that none of the commentators were focusing on it in the panel shows that followed.
He is such a great coach that 15 players quit in protest. (And only three of them returned to the team.)
Exactly why he is a great coach. Soccer is a team sport. A team of eleven playing together will beat a team of eleven superior athletes trying to beat you one on one. Say what you will about him, but Spain played well as a team. Individuals can be dangerous, but the most dangerous player on a soccer field is the player who is left unguarded. By moving the ball around and finding the open player, Spain was able to beat numerous teams with superior individual talent. Their final two goals were scored by the outside back. The problem with the US is they play too selfish. They need a coach like Vilda.

That's not why he was fired...he was already on thin ice

I believe there was also some video of him (the coach) grabbing a players boobie during the final match. That may have been the final straw.

In his defense, he never looked at what he was holding onto. For all he knew it was someone’s elbow or shoulder.
Jennifer Hermoso was given a hero’s welcome as she returned to action for her Mexican club, Pachuca, on Sunday – the first time she has played since being kissed on the lips by Luis Rubiales after the Women’s World Cup final.
Spain's Women's World Cup-winning squad will continue to reject national team call-ups unless there are more changes at the Spanish football federation following the scandal over Luis Rubiales' unsolicited kiss, a source clos...
By eliminating the phrase for “women's soccer” from the name of its national team, the Spanish Football Federation is hoping to show it has made a “conceptual shift” in its view of the sport. Spain made the move towards great...
